Pac-10
Stanford - 2
Cal - 3
UCLA - 11
UW - 14
CU - 26
USC - 33
UA - 45
ASU - 53
OSU - 56-70
UO - 91-112
WSU - 91-112

SEC
Vandy - 31
UF - 39
UGA - 56-70
Bama- 71-90
Tenn - 71-90
LSU - 91-112
UK - 91-112
USC - 91-112
Auburn - 139-152
Ark - 113-138
Ole Miss - Not in top 152
MSU - Not in top 152

Big 12
UT - 29
A&M - 50
ISU - 71-90
KU - 91-112
Mizzou - 91-112
KSU - 113-138
TT - 113-138
OU - 113-138
BU - Not in top 152
OSU - Not in top 152

Now you can see why the Pac-10 wants Texas and why Texas wants to go to the Pac-10. The Pac-10 will take on all of the other schools because they are on the back of the Texas bandwagon. The only way any of those schools (besides POSSIBLY Oklahoma) get invited to the Pac-10 is because of Texas. The Pac-10 gets a bunch of money out of the deal, whereas the schools that join get a bunch of money plus the association with the Pac-10 schools academically.

Also, I used the Academic Rankings of World Universities (ARWU) because it is the most used university ranking system in the world. LINK

Academics is a red herring in expansion arguments

Everyone who's paying attention knows that.

Academics is a side issue. Football is the money. Period.

UT will ALWAYS be a great school regardless of their conference affiliation.

Texas gets their money no matter where they go. Bottom line is that they want to be affiliated with the Pac-10 universities over the SEC ones, as well as being able to bring a few schools with them. If there were no attachments to other schools, they would still pick the Pac-10 over the SEC.

They're ranked ahead of us in most major lists as is Auburn.

This is why Texass fans playing the academic card is so funny, look who they are bringing with them.

Three of the four worst teams in the Big 12.

They have no choice but to bring Texas Tech with them as they are another public university in the state. They would not be allowed to leave them behind. Also, they have a huge rivalry with Oklahoma that they could not have disappear. Oklahoma State in the mean time is attached to Oklahoma's hip.

Doesn't matter what excuse they use, they need to STFU about conference academics.

Without knowing the ranking system (might explain some rankings) that's a terrible list, FWIW.

Don't those schools pretty much "have" to come with them? So it might still be about academics.

I put a link to it at the bottom of my post.

quote:

A survey on higher education published by The Economist in 2005 commented ARWU as "the most widely used annual ranking of the world's research universities"1. Burton Bollag, a reporter at Chronicle of Higher Education wrote that ARWU "is considered the most influential international ranking"2.

Do you think the Red River Rivalry will change to like, say, the Rio Grande Rivalry?
Or the Green River Rivalry? Just to be closer to their peers?

ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Scientific, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance with respect to the size of an institution.

Seems like pretty stupid criteria, but whatever.

As for the thread, like I mentioned, I still think academics at least play a small part.

The only Alabama listed there is UAB. It appears Alabama is unranked.

I think it's because they try to get as many out of state kids as possible! Most Alabama fans have never gone to school there. Probably why their ranking is as high as it is. That and they cheat, so they probably cheat the rankings as well!

Maybe the school academics are high, but I remember a report a few years back and the PAC 10 had one of the worst student athlete graduation ratios. Not sure if that is true anymore but I remember my uncle was shocked who brags about PAC 10 academics.
