I almost feel like people who think this show is great are just telling themselves that because it's a show about NOLA and don't TRULY believe it's that great.

I still compare it to Mad Men. Some people think Mad Men is boring because "nothing happens."

Some people just like well acted and executed slice of life dramas. That isn't everybody's cup of tea. As well awarded as Mad Men is, for example, it's ratings are never very good. I am sure Treme's long term ratings will fall short of The Wire.

Just because it isn't packaged with action and big time dramatic events that make it eye candy for the masses, doesn't mean that only "liberals" or people that are forcing themselves can enjoy it.
