Did baseball suffer from a lack of leadership

this year? Starting 32-6, then going 4-14, then sweeping the tourney, then 1-2 in the regional.
Inconsistency is usually a sign of youth (inexperience) and lack of leadership. Too many freshman in key roles, sophomores who lacked perspective, and upperclassmen who are very talented but just aren't leaders (Dean, Ranaudo, Gibbs).
Seems like losing the leadership JMitch, LeMahieu, Schimpf, and especially Coleman negatively affected the team as much as anything.
FWIW, I do expect even bigger success from this team next year.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

You don't think guys like Gibbs and Ranaudo are leaders? They exemplify good leadership. We just weren't good enough this year. I guess its a tough concept for people to rationalize.

Depends on the draft.

Again, very talented ball players, but no I don't think they are good leaders.
You don't start 32-6 and then go 4-14 with good leadership. We were not GREAT this year, but we were very good. Much better than a 4-14 stretch, especially getting embarrassed by Tulane and UNO.
That kind of slump doesn't happen to teams with strong leaders.

I think Dean and Gibbs are leaders, but they were not vocal. I think they tried to lead by example, but I think a great team always needs at least one guy who is an emotional guy who can also lead by example (Coleman). I thought Ranaudo fit this profile, but it's hard to be a leader when you are hurt for most of the year, and then you come back giving up 9 runs a game. How can you tell your team to do a better job, when you are not doing one yourself?
I always thought Mahtook has the makings of a great leader, but if he has personal issues, i can see where that can make it hard too. Hopefully next year we have some guys who can step up on and off the field.

Not to mention Mahtook was still a sophomore, I think he'll be more of a leader next year.

The 2009 national champions had a couple of "embarrassing" losses as well. Did they not have good leadership?

I can go along with most of that.
I do see Mahtook having the potential to fill the leadership role. I think he has the capability of getting in people's butts sideways if they're not doing their job.

Josh,
I think Mahtook is going to be DYNOMITE next year. And you're right. Classification makes a difference. It's hard for a true soph to get in there and challenge guys older than you.

Completely different situation when you are talking about grown, paid professionals playing 162 games a year vs. 18-20 year old college kids playing 56 games...often times versus inferior competition.

They never lost 14 of 18.

I thank the team and its coaches for getting off the deck to make and then win the SEC tourney, but something happened to this team in the last month or so of the regular season which can't be totally explained away with "We just weren't good enough this year." imo
I'm not close enough to the team or big enough college baseball expert to figure out what, but hopefully Paul can and fix it.
We might not have been good enough his season to have had hopes of returning to the CWS, but we sure and the hell should have done better than 8th in the SEC. imo

So a lack of leadership is the reason the team didn't play well for about a month?
Posted on 6/7/10 at 10:33 am to Lonnie4LSU
Lack of pitching. The team gave up an average of 9 runs per game during that 4-14 stretch, and then 7 runs per game out in LA.

what is so hard for people to understand that our pitching just wasnt very good this year? To win 40 games with an ERA around 5.50 just shows how good the other areas of this team are. It's something to build on next year.
Quit overthinking it
Quit overthinking it

That's not 100% the reason. Inexperience at certain positions and inconsistent pitching were to blame too.
But yes the lack of strong leadership did hurt. How many times over that bad stretch did we see the team look flat? How many times did they repeatedly make costly mental mistakes?
Repeated mental errors, guys failing to consistently do their jobs, and guys not showing up mentally ready to play are indicative of not having the right kind of leaders...the kind of leaders who jump somebody's butt for not doing what he's supposed to do.

I really think Coleman was the guy who held this team together last year and everyone rallied around him. We just didn't gel this year for some reason. Lots of talent that just didn't come together.

It's the pitching stupid

quote:the reason we lost in la was hitting not our pitching.most of those runs came in the first game in wich lsu won. our staff gave up an avg. of 5 runs per game in the last two,the "leaders" of the team failed. dean gibbs landry and mahtook didnt come thru with the bats when needed.im not dogging anyone those guys have been great to watch while here at lsu and i wish them luck in thier futures.
7 runs per game out in LA.
