Yeah right. This is all their fault.

Completely? No.
Majority? No.
Partially? No doubt.
This is not a Willie Hutton "that's where the money is" issue. O & G is out that deep because that's where federal policies have forced them to. Permits for onshore or shallow water drilling are more difficult because of NIMBYs (either aesthetic or environmental). It is cheaper (and also safer) to drill on or close to shore. The current leak would have been capped over a month ago if it was on land or in the shallows.
That is the main point that is being made and it is a valid one.

There is a big difference between a "NIMBY" and an "environmental wacko".
On land you are probably right, but in shallow water? That is highly debatable.

Divers, Nimwit, could have fixed in hours in shallow water.

Exactly.
It must be a bitch for some to live in a world of denial.

Two can play this game...
If pathetic whackos such as yourself hadn't supported big oil whores for positions of power we'd be much farther along in our conversion to clean sources of power.

You idiots keeping on repeating your talking points are not making an impact on anyone with more than half a brain.

That's not a very nice thing to say to Rex. He means well.

Ixtoc I was in less than 200 ft of water and it still leaked for 9 months. The only solution: drill a relief well.
If we could continue to drill on land where we have the capability to stop a leak, everyone would be much safer. The problem is no one wants that in their backyards.

Yeah, it would be nice if California and Florida would allow for just a little more drilling close to their coast. They have no problem using oil, but they like to leave the risk and problems to other states to worry about as far as drilling.

Blaming environmentalists for this disaster requires some of the most convoluted logic imaginable.

I wouldn't blame it on them, but as the other poster tried to explain, the ways in which big oil has been forced to drill now, is partially the fault of environmentalist. It is much safer and cheaper to drill in shallow water or on land.
Yes we would love to all find that magic unicorn that shits clean energy, but until that happens oil is our best option. How about making it easier to get? California has a shite ton of oil off of their coast, but they think they are too good to allow drilling. Of course as state they probably use more fuel than any other.

First off, the cost doesn't matter, as BP would turn a profit drilling pretty much anywhere their drills can reach.
Second off, BP has demonstrated time and time again that safety doesn't matter either, as two of their last three major accidents have occurred.. on land.
Thirdly, even if BP were allowed to drill off the California coast, what's to stop them from deepwater drilling in the GoM? They'd simply drill in both places as long as both are profitable.

After this disaster I cant see FL or CA letting oil rigs drill in their backyard.

they don't realize it's all their fault?

Bay, did you get the links for volunteer opportunities?
Posted on 6/6/10 at 11:45 am to Mudminnow
yeah, I signed up for most of the websites that were taking volunteers.

I'll be back down there tomorrow evening for work. The american public would be outraged at BPs effort if they knew what was going on.
