Response to a poorly written argument
Argument originally featured in Chicago Tribune and then in SI. Stupid.

SERIUOS??????? If he had started in the MLB he would be pushing Roses record when done. He is better than CAREW.

Like the guy says, not Ichiro's fault no one on the Ms can hit him in.

Depends what you mean by hitter. As far as just hitting the ball and getting on base, no he isn't overrated. As far as all around hitting(power and walking), hell yeah he is overrated.

he can be anything.......he just doesn't do it, simple as that. He is an awesome hitter, his ego does get in his way sometimes when it comes to walks. He has power he just knows his job is to be on base.
Ichiro is probably along the same lines as Arvydas Sabonis (portland trailblazers)........if he would have come to America sooner he would be iconic. He will be in the HOF no doubt (same can't be said for sabonis :shedstear:) but if he would have come sooner his status there would be different.

having power and having the numbers are two different things. I have seen him play since he has been in the league. He knocks em out in batting practice on a regular basis for fun. Other managers have talked about the guy. Is he a homerun hitter......no, he isn't but it doesn't mean the guy doesn't have any power. For his size he is a strong little bastard. I think he has proven himself in the MLB so enough said.

Plenty of guys do.

Well then Jeter does as well.

The guy can play. His OBP is really average for a guy who hits at such a good rate. Don't get me wrong, it's good, but it's not exceptional.
Even still, his WAR and RC/G are both good.

No he can't. He could be a 20 HR guy but he would have to sacrifice a ton of average.
Despite his great averages, he has only had an OPB over .400 once in his career. He has never had a SLG over .470. In 2009, 12 hitters had a OPB over .400 and 60 had a SLG over .470. In 2008 it was 10 and 67.

He sure is, but he is very overrated considering some people mention him as one of the greatest hitters in the game

Bingo. It is VERY average, but if you're building an argument against him as a hitter...that is one of the few knocks you can find.

Not as a power hitter!!!! Come on dude. He is the BEST RIGHT NOW as far as pure Hitter. But don't give me this power shite. I know he hits one out once in a while, but.....

Pure hitter? What the frick does that even mean? Making contact with the ball? Getting a ton of singles? Yeah, if that's what a pure hitter is Ichiro is the man.
Now as far as all around hitters, Ichiro isn't in the top 20. Ichiro cannot touch guys like Mauer, Pujols, Cabrera, Longoria, Zimmerman, Braun, Utley, etc.

Getting on base is THE IDEAL HITTER!!!!

NEVER SAID ALL AROUND!!!! He IS limited. BUT to your point the best ALL-AROUND HITTER IS JETER!!! frick AVG. HE IS the most CLUTCH out there.

I am a Yankees and a HUGE Jeter fan and even I think this is fricking stupid.

I think that's exactly what it means. Just simply being really good at hitting a ball with the bat. However, this guy is still wrong.
Ichiro intentionally fouls pitches off which kinda describes how good he is in that regard (purely hitting the ball).
Pujols and Mauer both do it better than Ichiro.

That sure as hell isn't Ichiro.
Ichiro is currently 19th in OBP
Ichiro was 30th in OBP last year
Ichiro was 58th in OBP in 2008
