If Coach M followed Skip instead of Smoke, I think Smoke

may look good right about now. Look at the conference play of Coach M and Smoke. No flame.

You never want to be the guy following a legend. You want to be the next guy after that. Once Les is gone, LSU will be able to get back near the top.

Exactly. I just looked up Smoke's SEC record and it smokes Coach M's I believe.

Turtle carried Smoke, Wiederhold was the main problem of Smoke era - look at UGA pitching in two years.

Because Mainieri had to deal with Smoke's garbage the first couple of seasons. And still managed to win 18 SEC games in 2008.
Smoke was able to ride off of Skip until it caught up with him around 2005.

Smoke had some great recruiting classes and part of the problem was that the guys he took ended up going to the pros at the last minute which hurt. Look at his record at ULL and overall. The thing is, he followed a legend. Coach M would be been run out as well. Just my view.
