You can go to jail for a bag of weed in your pocket, but you can create one of the worst clusters of environmental disaster, and be a complete dick to the media, act dumb to the government and point fingers, and be completely free as a bird with not even so much as a slap on the wrist.

Our laws are absurd. People are stupid. What do you expect??

if you grossed 68 billion dollars last year, you wouldn't be going to jail.

If I grossed that money, I probably wouldn't have a bag of weed in my pocket either. It would most likely be cocaine.

It's not about how much money BP grossed. It's the principle of how our laws are set up and how ridiculous things are set up to be.

why should an individual who has broken no laws go to jail?....if we want to put people in jail who have oil spills, then we should pass laws to make them criminal....

I know where I live, if I purposefully or even accidentally pour oil into the river then I am subject to criminal charges.

But then again, my low net worth doesn't forgive my 1 quart accident whereas BP's financial clout seems to forgive their billions of barrels accident. How nice!

incorrect...if you purposefully dump oil, that is a criminal act and you will in fact have to face criminal charges....

however, if you accidentally spill some oil, you will surely have to pay for the cleanup, but you will not have comitted a criminal act....

Yeah I'm not sure you can be convicted of a crime if you show no signs that you intended to do damage. BP obviously made a mistake, but they certainly didn't intend lose oil.

Actually if you were using a known faulty blowout preventer and then caused millions of barrels of oil to leak, due to gross negligence, you could be criminally liable.

Correct. You probably aren't contributing much to society, even if you only smoke at home.

Also correct. You've gotten vast amounts of energy from 5000 feet below sea level that powers everyone's A/C, car, fridge, etc. Yes, you get a break.
