CBS News turned away by BP and Coast Guard.
When CBS News tried to reach the beach, covered in oil, a boat of BP contractors with two Coast Guard officers on board told us to turn around under threat of arrest. Coast Guard officials said they are looking into the incident.
Why was news crew turned away - Clicl on link.

This is BP rules, not ours.
Is BP the law now? They won't allow scientists near the leak, now they won't allow news crews on the beach.

there are actually specific oil spill laws that say who can enter and work in the area and who cannot. a minimum level of training is involved.
some of the safety guys on here can get more specific about exactly what is required, but i know that, for instance, i haven't completed sufficient training to enter a spill area during cleanup.

When did training become a component of journalism?

Yeah, them not being allowed to film an oil covered beach is absolutely, totally about safety.
Some of you are fools.

Good!! The media needs to stay the frick away and let these people do their jobs.
the media has no idea WTF is going on and now id not the time to teach them about the O&G industry and what it consist of.

look, i don't know the exact scenario of what played out here. but what i do know is that there are clearly outlined rules - most of which come in legislation in response to the Exxon Valdez spill -- about what is required to enter an area where an ongoing hazmat cleanup is underway.
call me a fool if you want, i'm just saying that is the law.

yeah, heaven forbid we FINALLY get the images out to America that may finally make them realize what is, and has, been happening to our coast for years. Like it or not, federal assistance is often driven by public perception. The coast needs this exposure.....much in the same way that Katrina time coverage of NOLA helped raise tons of money, awareness, etc.

The media is fricking clueless, let them go get educated first and then allow them to cover and report on whats REALLY going on instead of just talking out of their arse about shite they have no idea about.

Most of america is stupid. Who cares? without media exposure this will be forgotten by the national conscience, and if it has the impact some fear we will desperately need federal action and aid, as well as goodwill support.
now is not the time to censor images.
now is not the time to censor images.

i can see this disaster being a net positive for the coast in terms of eventual restoration, although it might take 10-15 years before that becomes apparent

I agree we need the exposer but as long as it is reported fair, informative and ACCURATE!!
I guess that is too much to ask.
However, I must say, the national media is doing a hellava better job then our local media cowboys. Jesus Christ, have any of you listened to WWL Radio or 690AM (Karree Johnson) God those people are fricking idiots

That's my hope, but my fear is also that it might be too late.
either way, we need those ugly, graphic, images being put out there. Let the pundits on each side argue about what/why shite, but people need to see this.

I listen to them every day. Karree was saying weeks ago what BP admitted today (that flow is more than first stated) and Eric Asher has been pushing for LA to get a fair share of revenues from feds. They may be idiots to you because they may say things you don't like but I think they have done a pretty good job.
Oh and some of the people on WWL are fricking idiots.

Are you kidding me? Eric Asher??
Our fricking elected officials has been pushing for this for years!! You think Eric fricking Asher is going to make a difference???

Hey, you brought up the local media. Not me. I only mentioned why I disagreed with you calling them "fricking idiots". I never claimed anything they said would make a difference.
