North Carolina Defense ranked #6 nationally in 2009 in total defense. They ranked #14 in pass defense and # 11 in rush defense. However, those numbers can be a bit misleading as North Carolina played only 2 teams ranked in the top 50 in total offense, and they lost both of those games. They gave up over 300 yards rushing to Ga. Tech, ranked 26th offensively. They also gave up over 400 yards of total offense to FSU, ranked 28th nationally in total offense. With that said, NC’s defense is scary good. 100 yard rushing games are rare against this defense. They ranked #12 nationally in interceptions with 19 interceptions. They do tend to struggle against teams with a running quarterback like Miami, Va. Tech, FSU, and Ga. Tech.

Game changing stat:
North Carolina played 2 teams with top 50 rushing attacks. I think that is a huge reason their defense looked so good. The teams they played were ranked...120th, 92nd, 112th, 70th, 71st, 59th, 56th, and whatever the Citadel is, in rush offense. This is a telling stat.

The legend of unc's D will rival that of the 85 bears by kickoff.

Scary good is a little bit much.

They may be a solid squad.

I doubt this team will be in fear of a UNC defense. They've faced better.

NC State...

Russell Wilson has shredded that Amazing UNC secondary to pieces the last two years.

20-27 for 259, 4tds 0ints in 2009

Not sure of the stats in 2008 but NC State won by 30 or 40

3 of their guys on defense are almost locks barring a disastrous season for 1st-2nd round picks...

Kiper has a few more slotted on their defense very high too. They have a defense that is arguably better than LSU and a offense just as bad. Very similar teams.

Its horrendous...

I tend to think Marvin Austin is very overrated at DT, but that safety (Deunta something) and Quan Sturdivant at OLB are scary good.

That bein said, i do think this defense is good...but has lots of holes

so does their offense.

Their offense and defense rank statistically near ours. Total offense and total defense they are a couple spots better. Scoring offense and scoring defense we are a couple spots better.

I am just guessing here, but I think we had a slightly tougher schedule.

Good one. Not that encouraged when u put it that way. Unless UNC cowars down at the sight of the mighty Tigers from the SEC.

UNC O-line decimated before the season started. Basically started the second-team there. Lost some talent at wide-out too.

To brg,

NC State shreaded NC 2 years ago when Wilson got healthy at the end of the yr. Last year it was 28-27 and UNC outgained NC State and UNC had 2 to's to none for nc state.

True but this could be the best defense we playnext year...Probably not as good as FL or BAMA in 09.

Maybe but people are making this defense out to be stronger than it's probably going to be.

UNC has a bunch of playmakers that should be high draft picks in 2011

NC State didnt make a bowl game last year...

And i dont care what the score was or how many turnovers each team had...Russell Wilson still threw for 250 and 4 tds

I dont see what your point is at all

3 first round draft picks is nothing to sneeze at.

I get your point, and I agree with it to an extent. But, this is a very talented defense we will be playing...and I don't like that we are playing them in game 1.

"Shredded" obviously has different meanings for different people.

I saw the game, did you? It was far from a "shredding"...penalties, to's, and a couple of lucky bounces changed the game...
