Is it sliding? I just noticed this tidbit on CNNSI.com.

quote:

Jones is still raw, but his intensity and aptitude to adjust to whatever scheme he ends up in makes him an attractive mid-round selection.

I liked reading this from a Packers writer.

quote:

Q: What do you think about Chad Jones, the big thumper safety from LSU? I know that he is tampering with baseball, but I liken him to Taylor Mays.

Bill: Agent is trying to get me Chad for next week, so looking forward to that. You're right, he's a lot like Mays but might be a better prospect, in my opinion. I'm not sure that I like Mays all that much. He just didn't do much at USC. Now, was that the scheme? Could be. But five interceptions as a four-year starter? I'd take Burnett of Georgia Tech and Jones of LSU over Mays.

Both Jones and Mays are so big and such good athletes, you know the potential is there. Jones did more in his last two years than Mays did in four. But, again, you can't argue with Mays' potential. Some coach will be positive that he's the guy that can make it work.

If he goes later than the second round, I'd say that's a disappointment for him.

I don't know if it is sliding, seems like he was a projected 3rd rounder even when he announced.

I'd be shocked if he does before the third round.

This doesn't sound like an early pick --

"Teams that interviewed him at the combine - they're allowed 60 interviews - and one team said it was the worst interview they had of their 60."

He should have comeback this year. I'm sure he would be a late first rounder in the 2011 draft.

seen some places where they feel Chad is only entering the draft to get some immediate money because of his kids, but would rather be playing baseball.

If they don't move up to get Earl Thomas and instead go CB or DL, I can see the Eagles using a third rounder (#70 or #87) on Jones.

With the right coaching and effort put forth by Chad. He may prove to be better than the guys drafted before him. A reliable tackler. Runs smooth, doesn't need a second gear. Has Size, Speed, Atletic Ability, many of the things you can't coach. Chad can and will do anything he puts his mind to. Can return punts and play Special Teams with the best of them. There are a couple teams I'd like to see him get on with. When allowed to blitz, he can and will get to the QB.

That probably has something to do with it. Another thing is he probably just didn't want to be in school anymore. I know grades kept him from playing baseball his freshman year.

I could be wrong, but I thought I remembered some academic issues. It was pretty well publicized, too.

Might not have been the full time starter! We are loaded back there with talent every bit as good as CJ. Less experience but just as gifted.

But moving to the 1st round...maybe in MLB draft

Here's some positive press from today's article by Stewart Mandel on undervalued players.

quote:

Defensive back: Chad Jones, LSU
Jones is such a gifted athlete (he's a standout baseball player, too), I long assumed he'd be a future high draft pick. So you can imagine my surprise to see he's a projected third-rounder despite excelling as a junior. Jones had 74 tackles, three interceptions, a forced fumble, a blocked kick and a hard-earned 93-yard punt return last season, but two plays in particular stood out to me: This bone-crushing hit to save a touchdown against Arkansas and his goal-line stop to preserve a win against Mississippi State. His coverage skills will need work, but if you get him on the field (perhaps starting out on special teams), he'll make some big-time plays for you.

LINK

I can't believe he was the worst interview as posted above. He's always been a favorite of mine. I'd like to see him excel at the next level.

My guess LATE 2nd round to New England
who have amassed a handful of 2nd round picks.

Chad has never focused 100% on any sport and because of this, I believe he will be a tremendous asset/steal for any NFL team. He will improve his skill set big time in the NFL.

Grades were an issue in both his first yr & last yr.He was struggling just to stay eligble his last football season from most accounts.

2nd. round, is where he should be. Many teams are looking for players like him. The right team who knows.

Really? I think the trend in the NFL is going toward more ball-hawking cover safeties rather than in-the-box type safeties like Mays and Jones.
