When I was a youngster, I attended the LSU vs. Purdue first round game at the PMAC in 1986. LSU was the 11 seed and Purdue the 6 seed. The Tigers won a double OT thriller with what I can only assume was helped by a big home court advantage. Gene Keady was not to happy with having to play a road game in the NCAA tournament. LSU then upset highly ranked Memphis (State) on a last second shot. Oddly enough, LSU's sweet 16 game was against Georgia Tech in the Omni in Atlanta. Not on their campus, but in the same city. LSU made the Final Four run that year, undoubtedly spurred on by the home court advantage in the first two rounds. I think the NCAA made a rule the next year that a team could not play a NCAA tournament game in their own gym.

I was there when Anthony Wilson hit that shot against Memphis State. The Memphis team had some graet players, William Bedford, Baskerville Holmes. I still remember at the beginning of the second half, Memphis purposefully lined up on the wrong side of the court and LSU fell for it. They inbounds the ball and the guy goes straight to the ungaurded hoop for 2. The people sitting next to us told us that Memphis liked to do it when they played teams that weren't familiar to them.

Also, I don't personally remember, but my parents would tell me that they took me to meet the team after qualifying for the Final Four in 1981. My favorite player, Leonard Mitchell, picked me up and carried me around on his shoulders.

Ricky Blanton's garbage bucket right at the end of the LSU/UK game to get LSU to the Final Four in 1986.

LSU already led by 1, that bucket put them up 3 with less than 20 seconds. No 3 point line in those days, so it basically clinched the win.

The '87 run to the Elite 8 almost got the Tigers into the Final Four at the Superdome. I remember Dale Brown saying that he was prepared to tell the team that they would still want to play hard in the NIT, when LSU showed up as the 10 seed on the 2nd to last game released of the 32 first round games. LSU was on the bubble and it was down to the final two games of the last bracket shown on tv(with I assume the 2/15 game being the last shown).

The 81 run was really special. Regional semi & finals was in the Dome, crazy time for a 14 yr old

86 was special too since they were a 11 seed

Yep I was at that game. It was unusual that LSU got to play home games as such a low seed, something CBS announcer Billy Packer never failed to mention .... but at the same time, the Tigers beat Ga Tech IN ATLANTA, and also beat Kentucky (sweet, sweet, sweet win ... Rickey Blanton hitting the game-clinching layup and running down the court pumping his fists ... Kentucky star Kenny "Sky" Walker giving an incomprehensible post-game interview ... "I felt like a pari-uh-site, or they was a pari-uh-site on me ...") The Purdue game was a lot of fun and their coach, Gene Keady was such an arse in his white suit and bad toupee. Memphis St had William Bedford and a very talented team picked to go to the Final 4 ... when A. Wilson hit the game winner at the buzzer the Assembly Center was truly a "deaf" dome that day!

Purdue was actually a 6 seed. Tech was 1, Ky 2 and Memphis State a 3.

Yeah, I had a typo on Purdue. But knowing the brackets, I would have to assume that Tech was the 2 seed (because Memphis State the 3 seed would meet them in the Regional Semi-Finals) and Kentucky would have been the 1 seed.

No, Kentucky was the #1 seed. Memphis and Purdue were #3 and #6, respectively. I think Tech might have been the #2.

Compared to where LSU Basketball is at this point in time, that seems like such a long time ago in a Galaxy far far away.........
