The rushing game LSU Coach Les Miles wants so much to improve made an appearance at the Tigers' first full-scale scrimmage on Saturday.
The 130-play workout, closed to the media, marked the midpoint in spring practice, the eighth with seven remaining. Miles was smiling about the 230 yards rushing the offense compiled.
"I felt like it was a very physical day," Miles said. "I want us to be physical. I said we were going to run the football, we're going to run the football."
The format didn't emphasize down and distance, rather just running plays to help acclimate younger players to the newness of playing. One of the younger players who excelled was redshirt freshman running back Michael Ford, who rushed for 79 yards on 16 carries. Stevan Ridley compiled 84 yards on 16 tries.
Miles said the coaching staff also sought to work on downfield passing but the windy conditions partially negated that. Quarterbacks totaled 200 yards and the only touchdown of the day came on a 43-yard pass from Jarrett Lee to Rueben Randle.
Starter Jordan Jefferson completed 10 of 21 throws for 86 yards and Lee was nine of 20 for 105 yards and the touchdown.
"It was windy and it hurt us throwing the long ball," Miles said. "We had some deep balls that were not necessarily complete, but taken from us by the day."
Randle had four receptions for 71 yards, Deangelo Peterson caught six for 42 yards and Russell Shepard three for 19. Shepard also had five carries for 35 yards, including a 19-yarder, the longest of the day.

Russell Shepard was underutilized in scrimmage.
Brockers and Montgomery might get the dline back to being dominant!

On a different note seems Randle has been shining. Who do you think has the better season TT or RR

RR, for the most part, he will be covered by lesser skilled DBs than TT. Should allow for him to have a breakout year

yea I keep thinking the same thing. I know he did not get a ton of looks last year but when he did he was solid as a true freshman. Now that he has a bigger role and a year under his belt hopefully we can find out.

Most likely Reuben. Nothing against TT though. JJ never really utilized his height last year. He would throw it where 5'10 corners could knock the ball away.
TT is tough to take down and Randle seems to have great hands. I'm very excited. First time we have had a starting QB come back since 2006.

problem with JJ and Randle last year was that JJ always looked to Lafell or Tolliver first.

Hopefully the problems on offense will be worked out and greatly improved. With the new additions on the staff and a returning starting QB. If the line improves like I have hopes that it will. I think we will be a much better team. The weapons will be sprinkled all over the field. Better Line and more focused JJ and I think it will be fireworks. I know our run game is slightly unknown but I think the guys we have in RM and SR will be good. I also expect to see MF got action often as well.

Dude cracks me up. So this year, instead of saying all our long passes were incomplete, let's say they were not necessarily complete.

Why not post the whole sentence so those of us who are intellectually capable can see what he said. The day meaning the windy conditions contributed to the long passing game struggling. How hard is that to understand?

I know im glad the d-line got four sacks but if the o-line doesnt start protecting we will have the same O problem as last year... They only scored 1 TD today
