i see they are now a chain, and have about 6-8 places in Texas. Same owners as the ones in Brooklyn and Hoboken (which are great).

Has anyone tried the ones in Texas? Worth a shite?

I eat at the one in Dallas every once in a while for lunch. Pretty good for NY style pizza around DFW but it is a tad bit greasy

Did they import their Russian waitstaff from Brooklyn?

Did you happen to notice the ovens?

i was of the understanding that you can no longer build the old coal fired ovens like in NY/NJ/CT anymore b/c of EPA regulations....but the ones that existed were grandfathered in.

Just wondering if the product served in Texas is remotely close to the Hoboken or Brooklyn versions.

And yeah, great pizza will have some grease/oil..not necessarily a bad thing.

Almost sure it's a brick oven

and on the grease, it was more than one would expect from that type of pizza. Still really good and didn't make the crust soggy so I guess all in all not a big deal.

Is that the one in west village? If so, its avg. In Dallas, always go to Louie's.

Yes. Agree there are better, Louie's is good as well as Olivellas near SMU. But both are different in style to Grimaldi's.

gotcha. was assuming it would be "great" given what seems to be a sudden rush of expansion. Too bad.

Wonder when that drop in quality hits the old locations near NYC? The one in Brooklyn has always been tourist heavy, but was still really good the last time i went years ago. Actually liked the one in Hoboken better.

Odd, if true.

I can't imagine those would create any emission issues more so than what any typical barbeque joint, actually burning charcoal or wood products, would produce. Haven't heard anything about cracking down on them.

i found it odd as well. Heard it on one of those Food TV or Travel Channel shows. Not sure if they had their facts right.

eta: just googled "coal burning pizza ovens emissions laws". lots of talk, but i'm not sorting through it all.

Smells like right-wing rumor mongering.

They'll get my coal burning pizza oven, when they can pry it away from my cold dead hands!

Moved to Dallas after 3 years in NYC. IMO, Grimaldis is probably the best and most authentic New York style pizza in Dallas.

Next in line would probably be Coal Vines or Eno's. Louie's is very good (and just generally a cool place), but quality is erratic.

They have been overwhelmed since Henderson became safe for the suburbanites and uptown crowd. And being on the Diners Drive Ins show pushed a lot of traffic their way too. We've started going during the week and its like old times.....crowded but not crazy crowded like it is on the weekends now. Last time I was in there Judge Cruezot was at the end of the bar by himself sipping on something. Of course I could barely see his head....he needs a bar booster seat.
