Just watched it. Why?

Can anyone give me the storyline? I didn't get it.

Guy replaces a dude on a team, finishes the rotation, goes home and meets his kid, and goes back for another rotation as the bomb guy? Interesting.

mainly spose to be a story about how war can mentally drain people, you probably will notice that near the end of their shift they are having mental and emotional break downs becuase of war they are fighting.

yeah, I know. Batman sucked bit time as well. I didn't really get it. Wealthy man assaults the mentally ill. Big deal.

I understand that, but Best Picture? REALLY?

Now I know why it made less than $13M.

because it had a tiny release? Because they didn't have much money to promote the trailer on commercials and talk shows?

Pretty much.

There were movies that had great success in limited release that wound up making it wide release. If this was looked at as being such a great movie why didn't it make it to wide release?

Here is a great review:

don't discount it because of how much money it made. If that was the case movies like Transformers would be known as some of the greatest movie ever.

I just found it fascinating cause the dude was literally addicted to war, to that adrenaline he got from it. He was so addicted that he couldn't lead a normal life.

That's a site dedicated to giving lousy reviews. They also can't spell "independent" correctly in their menus.

They are so edgy. We get it, you hate Hurt Locker. Move on with your life. The biggest praise most of us are heaping on it is "Eh. It was better than Avatar."

It all goes back to the opening dialogue of how "war can be like a drug".

It would have been a better movie if James found the guys employing kids as body bombs.

I disagree completely... I was in Iraq and I connected with the movie. the movie was about the addiction to the adrenaline, of becoming addicted to the unpredictability of daily life and living each moment on the edge. this is why at the end of the movie he told his baby to cherish life when you are young, because as he got older he only really had one passion.. EOD. and that's why I think he went back.

that's how I felt when I came back in 2004 and I still have the same feelings today. There are many, many vets who even tho they may have had bad experiences, "miss it" badly.

this movie was fantastic, even tho a couple scenes were not exactly realistic. I'm glad it won.

any other vets here have an opinion on the movie?

I agree UGA.

I think it is both overrated and underrated at the same time. It's underrated due to the fact like you said it didnt make very much money but won best picture. But overrated by the academy and just about everybody on this board, i mean its just like any other iraq or gulf war movie i think people are hyping it so much now just because its a the cinderalla story.

That's the thing though. Bad shite like that happens a lot and I'm sure they don't always find out who did it.
