Derenbecker
Says he can play 1, 2 or 3, but is fundamentally a guard. I have been thinking he would play the three, but I may have to reconsider (since I have so much input).

I hope he can contribute more than Ludwig next year

Put him in at the 2. I like his size advantage there
LSU is in good hand with TJ.

Not trying to flame, but how much better is Derenbecker than Eddie Ludwig? Is it fair to compare the two or not?

much better overall
Ludwig is a SF needing to gain some strength and Derenbecker is SG that should contribute immediately

How athletic is Derenbecker, and who is a player you would compare him to? I asked this question about Ludwig to a friend of mine from Lake Charles, and he said Kyle Singler. Hope you can give me a better comparison for Derenbecker than my buddy did for Ludwig.

he's built more like Scheyer, but more of a slashing type

Will Derenbecker start for LSU next basketball season?

I think Scheyer is a good comparison.

Derenbecker and Ludwig both went to the same school and are both white. Beyond that, the comparisons end. They are different players, with different skill sets that play different positions.
Oh, and by the way, I think Ludwig is going to be a very good player. I hope everyone gets their jokes in now on him.

i think next year and beyond ludwig will be one of our key role players off the bench. he's had some nice moments this year considering he should have been redshirted. i like that he knows how to play and he's decisive, unlike garret green. just needs to work on his body and get stronger and quicker.

Eddie plays hard and does what he can as freshmen. He will get better he's had some bright moments
Played well last night for example

are we allowed to compare a white guy to a black guy or do I have to think up a suitable white guy to compare them to? How about former LSU players?
Derenbecker
White guy comparison: lefty Don Redden
Black guy comparison: Clarence Caesar
Ludwig:
White guy comparison: Brian Beshara
Black guy comparison: Harold Boudreaux

Horrible comparisons. Boudreaux was a complete bust and, I think, a barely average player. I'll give you Beshara. I'm thinking Darnell Lazare is the better black player comparison.
I think Redden or Blanton are good white comparisons for Derenbecker. Caeser? He was a basically a three-point threat and nothing more. Are you just comparing height and weight? I hope Derenbecker is a better all-around player. I'm thinking a better black player comparison is Collis Temple III, or maybe Garrett Temple with a better shot and not as much defense.

Scheyer 6'5" 190"
Derenbecker 6'7" 200
Not a good comparison. Derenbecker's game is almost identical to this guy except a lefty.
Robbie Hummel

Derenbecker's coach seems to think he will be a guard in college, so that doesn't make me think of Hummel who is a 6-8 forward, but he's a stud so I'll take the comparison.

Hummel is more perimeter oriented than a forward. Hummel is a pick/pop kid that can really shoot and has decent handles. Matt is a small forward that will go inside/out, he plays 1,2,3 at Country Day because he is going against Crescent City and St. Martin's. Eddie could play point guard against them teams. Matt does his best work at the SF spot where he can go to the post on smaller defenders and step out and shoot the 3. With bigger guys, he will be more of a guard where he comes off screens, shoots or takes a few dribbles to get to the rim, but Matt is no Scheyer who is more of a PG. Hummel is the best comparison so far. With the exception of being 6'10", Peja Stojakovic is a good comparison as well when Peja was in his prime.

Apples to oranges FWIW. Ludwig is a postplayer who will be an asset once he gets stronger. Ideally, TJ would have liked to RS him for that very reason this year. MD is a polished ball handler and wing shooter who was the star of Country Day last year. MD was the #1 option and EL was #2. Derenbecker and Turner will seriously push the returning wing players for the Tigers, Dotson,Harris and Kinsley, for playing time as soon as they step foot on the practice court. MD is skilled enough to handle the two spot but as he gets stronger he'll be tough to handle on the wing. Bottom line, he will be much more of an asset as a TF than EL has been.
