This is a good hire --- 1. bringing back LSU & Louisiana guys to the staff i.e. Frank and Steve is good. Secondly, he can coach TE's & offense. Thirdly, he can coach QB's.

I stopped reading after page 3 but I do think this is a good hire. There is something to be said about LSU connections and familiarity with Louisiana high schools.

One poster made a point about blaming Ensminger for Jason Campbell's abysmal career at Auburn and the fact that Campbell is playing with the Redskins. For those that don't remember Campbell was basically Jordan Jefferson until his senior year. Then all of a sudden a light bulb clicked on and he had a good senior year. I also remember Campbell as a senior making a gutsy fourth quarter drive against LSU that beat us. He clearly developed under Ensminger's watch. Campbell will never be a great NFL quarterback but he became a very good college quarterback.

Just sayin

He did in the late 70's. I have no idea how good he was. Apparently split time with Woodley. I don't think you need to be a rocket scientist to be a TE coach though.

I have this out of the box want to have a coach that can either do a great job coaching a key position or be a great recruiter(or both).

I remember him during his QB days at LSU and he was pretty good. I like that Steve is an LSU guy. I'm not clear on why there are so many changes in where he's been coaching, and from college to hs and back again. Is he somebody who will "stick" in one job for very long? A lot of questions in my mind, but I wish him well.

Cute image, but like most of your post in this thread it lacks substance.

Carry on with your bitch fest and your we are doomed cause of a TE coaching hire agenda.

No redfish .. It is just a bad fricking hire .. if you want to play the supposition game and read a novel into it .. knock yourself out .. so what is your counterpoint besides "he's an LSU boy !!!" while you bow in front of your bathroom mirror with your undersized purple bike shorts with the sock stuffed in the crotch yelling "Geaux Tiiiiigahs!" ??

And just how do you know this? Were you on the team? If so, who are you?

I never said or even implied SE was a better qb than David Woodley. I don't think he was. But he was no slouch either and had either of them been LSU's sole qb instead of splitting time as they did, they would have ended up among LSU's all-time best.

Mac began using 2 qb's after he had such a bad run with Pat Screen and Nelson Stokley. He said he would never again rely on just a single player, that he would always have a 2nd qb ready to play in case the starter got hurt and the only way to do that was to ensure that the #2 got adequate playing time and experience.

He made no secret of this and any qb coming to LSU at the time knew he would split time with somebody else if he played, even Bert Jones.

And speaking of Bert, Paul Lyons was the better qb until Bert's jr. year. As a matter of fact for those who don't know it, Lyons set a then NCAA record for total offense in a game at Wisconsin in I believe 1971.

The situation with Bert and Paul Lyons was similar to what happened with JJ, JL and RP.
Bert was never supposed to play as early as he did and Lyons was supposed to remain on defense. LSU had one of the top qb's in the country out of hs in Trey Prather. He was in the same class as Terry Bradshaw and Joe Ferguson and Bradshaw always said he was the best of the bunch. But Prather lost his desire to play, ended up in Viet Nam and stepped on a mine, blew his legs off and died. He was supposed to follow Butch Duhe who died of a brain hemmorage just prior to the '70 season opener against A&M. All this reinforcing Mac's practice of using 2 qb's.

Jones eventually turned out to be LSU's only AA at qb, receiving every AA honor in 1972 except the AP which went to John Hufnagel at Penn St. He didn't become the starter until the '71 ND game and he didn't find out he was starting until just before ko.

I've been watching LSU fb since '58 and Bert Jones is bar none the best qb I ever saw at LSU.

If you could have watched the game against Ole Miss his senior season and how he brought the Tigers back from a 21-0 deficit you would realize he might not have been the best to ever wear the purple and gold but he was pretty damn good!!

That was actually his sophomore season in 1977 ... That Ole Miss team handed eventual national champion Notre Dame their only loss that season ... That was easily the peak of his career at LSU ..

That's funny because total passing yards went down every year after Al Borges took over quarterbacks...
