In the south yes....but...nationally....I think hockey may be the actual # 3 sport. The Frozen Four every year is a huge success, big rivalries (i.e. MSU vs Michigan) are held in college football stadiums that sell out.
In fact...as far as attendance goes Lacrosse can prob. make a big push for it the # 3 sport..much like the other two in contention..their playoffs are on ESPN....and National Title game sells out to packed houses.

Yeah I believe that College baseball is #3, I don't watch hockey nor major league baseball but I enjoy college baseball.

Check the per game top 20 attendance averages for the baseball and women's hoops.

Women's hoops per game attendace is higher among to top 20 and it's reall not as close as you think.

Don't know about hockey, but women's hoops might actually be no. 3 nationally...heck, and maybe even in the SEC.

yes its easily number 3. no one outside of the north gives a damn about hockey and no one outside the east coast cares about lacrosse. College baseball is big in the south, parts of the west coast, and much of the heart land. Its just not big in the north east or big ten country.

other than Tennessee, I'm pretty sure SEC baseball avaerage more people per game than women's basketball. I know it does for LSU, Ark, South Carolina, and Ole Miss for sure.

In terms of national perspective... absolutely yes. It's not just the South. College baseball is huge in California. There are probably more premier college baseball teams in the states of Texas and California than top hockey or lacrosse teams nationwide.

Don't be so sure. You've only named 4 teams. The SEC has 12.

I bet it's closer than you think SEC and I know for a fact women's hoops attendance is higer nationwide.

Very easy to find out. Google NCAA baseball attendance 2009 and NCAA women's basketball attendance 2009. The numbers are all there and you can do it in less than a minute.

Do you really think college baseball could pull this off? Hell...LSU can't pull off a cold crowd in football...and hockey does this in middle of winter and the fans show up.

and fwiw...this year at Michigan....at the big house...its expected to sell out forthis years game against MSU

You're too much of a board veteran to make such a rookie mistake.

Men's Division I soccer probably averages a higher attendance.

Huge? Have you looked at per game attendance for baseball at the most successful programs.

It's huge here. It's pretty big, but not really that close to LSU... in Texas, Arkansas, South Carolina, and to a lesser extent Ole Piss and Mississippi State.

Probably a handful of others.

Only 15 schools averaged over 3,000 fans per game in baseball attendance last year.

Again, let's put it in perspective. It's huge here and it's special here. And that is great for us.

It is not nationwide and in fact is not in most regions of the country.

The attendance numbers at the CWS are pretty impressive. Not to mention, the big outdoor hockey games are insanely promoted. If there was a weekend college baseball game at Reliant Stadium between UT and LSU and both teams marketed the hell out of it, they could fill the stadium.

It covers a much bigger base than NCAA hockey. And lacrosse (as the OP mentioned) is not even remotely close

the top ten in attendance for WBB for 2009 averaged 9,050. I'm not even going to worry about doing baseball because I know it wasn't that high.

Is there a way to separate that into attendance on days when only the women play?

ETA: For the record, I am not arguing that college baseball is bigger nationwide than women's college basketball. But I think it's much bigger "nationwide" than men's hockey and certainly men's lacrosse.

I never once made an argument that hockey or lacrosse are more popular than college baseball.

Nor have I that women's hoops is because I don't need to make the argument. It is a fact backed up by numbers. Even women's hoops television ratings are higher.

And please don't make the argument that ESPN won't give LSU a chance. They have tried numerous times to pimp regular season college baseball. I remember watching LSU play Ms. State on ESPN in the regular season back in 1985.

The simple fact is the ratings are poor. If they were even remotely good, they'd show it. They are about making money.
