How mainstream BR Restaurants can survive in this economy

I'll start:
1) Stop being lazy with the food. Cook your roast beef, have bread choices, make food from scratch, be innovative.

This is not true. My family was in the food distribution business for 30+ years and the last 2 years have been by far their worse years since they got in it. Some distributors sales are off as much as 40% or more.
And we talked to a lot of restaurants being that they were our customers and a lot say they are doing almost 50% less business than 2-3 years ago. That's a huge hit for restaurants being that they work on high profit margins. That's a lot less money at the end of the month to pay bills.

I bet their business has fell off somewhat too. If not they had to pick up customers from restaurants going out of business, etc.

Compared to the rest of the US, BTR is in better shape than most. LSU, Dow, XOM and the other Petrochemical plants along the river have helped to ease the pain.
In the early 80's many builders were moving out of BTR (Some moved out owing lots of money to many). I saw a friend of mine out one night, he was too busy and had 4 houses going. I asked him about it and his reply, "Bad builders were moving, the good ones are way too busy!"
BTR has always had a little lag time with the rest of the US.

try telling that to the masses not spending money in BR .. according to the "great" Loren Scott's economic indicators .. BR shouldn't be in a recession .. but people are NOT spending money here ..

I eat at dempsey's alot with friends. on all various days of the week (weekdays and weekends)at different times.
the place always has people, but it never has a wait and there is never a "crowd"

It's all about the relationships a business builds along the way, good times and bad. If you're good to your folks, you will keep a steady following, if you suck or cheat people, you're going down when the going gets tough.
I know there are PLENTY of people spending money in baton rouge, bc I know LOTS of restaurant and catering owners and managers, and have talked to them first hand. Straight from the horses mouth, as fresh and unfiltered as it gets. The money is there for the taking, you just can't expect to pull a rabbit out of a hat when times are hard, the hard working establishments have already built a customer base, winning those customers over when the going was GOOD, and they're gonna be HARD to take away, if at all possible.
Catering right now is absolutely crazy, more business than anyone can handle, lots of caterers are joining forces and actually trading jobs bc they can't book 4 parties on one day.
Crawfish season and lent are also going to play a HUGE factor in the biz.
Everone has their own opinion, and facts, and friends in the biz, but my .02 is that business for the people I know, is good as ever right now.
