Thinking about this since Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is being made into a movie.
1. Grand Theft Auto as a Crime epic
2. Halo series to be made like Avatar
3. The Legend of Zelda to be done by Peter Jackson
4. The Oregon Trail as a Western
5. Twisted Metal to be made like Mad Max

It is funny that you said that. The first shot I saw of Avatar was of the Ofsprey-like aircraft and Marines. I thoght it was a Halo movie. Then I saw the rest of it and said, "I didn't know the Smurfs were in Pochahontas!"

A Halo movie has been in talks for years. I'm pretty sure Peter Jackson's name was brought up at some point. It just hasn't happened for whatever reason.
I stopped following its progress a few years ago after Greg's Previews disappeared from Yahoo.
The storyline wouldn't be similar to Avatar, but the visuals would be amazing if they used the same type of effects.

I think the Halo movie project is dead. District 9 was the rebound project for the folks that were going to work on Halo
And I think the director to be made the ODST commerical as kind of a farewell to the concept
