The Perfect Storm.

Adaptation.
Hmmm. Tough one. Usually great books make mediocre movies.
You could make a good case THE GODFATHER film is better. One of the best films and certainly not one of the best all-time books.

Book was pretty damn good. Don't think it qualifies.
You'd need something kinda middle of the road that someone took and nailed it out of the park. Not a huge GUMP fan (the team or the film) but heard the book was absolutely horrible. So that's one.

"The Shinning" was as good but different than the book.

For No country for old men, the book is slightly better because the movie is practically identical in most cases, down to the dialogue, to the book. Aside from some parts in the end, it's an extremely faithful adaptation.
When this comes up, I always say Big Fish. The book had a few more stories, which was cool, but the book is just poorly written. The author had a good idea for a book and just couldn't execute.
October Sky might have been better as a movie because the book is just his autobiography from his childhood. It not as "storybook" as the movie and didn't affect me the same way.

Godfather was a wonderful book.
Fight club is also a good book, but the movie may have been better. Well done

Jaws. The book was very different, but in a horrible way.

The 13th warrior. The movie wasn't great but the book was unreadable.

The Blind Side
The book had no where near the catharsis or emotion of the movie. Half of it was a history lesson on the evolution of the left tackle position.
The Count of Monte Cristo
I saw the movie in theaters and it has become one of my favorites of all time. I read the book and it sharewd very little with the movie. Which is good because in 1600 pages there is no action at all, many unrealistic circumstances, and I am glad so much liberty was taken with the movie.
Great Expectations
Just personal preference here. The movie could have been much better. But I still enjoyed it enough to want to read the book.

Someone told you wrong. Winston Groom wrote a great book.
