Copeland Rethinking His Decision

From the News Sentinel: UT commitment J. G. Copeland seemed all too non-committed after his official visit to LSU this weekend. The 6-2, 240-pound defensive end from Troup High School in La Grange, LA., (sic) said he was "neutral" between UT and LSU. "I have to think about it," Copeland said. "I have to sit down and weigh my options out." Copeland has been committed to UT since May, but spoke favorably of his visit to Baton Rouge. "It was pretty fun," he said. "I viewed the campus and went out with the players and ate . . . I'm committed to Tennessee but I'm going to sit down and make a decision." Copeland said LSU head coach Les Miles was "tremendous" and also sought counsel from former UT coach John Chavis, who is now the defensive coordinator at LSU. "He told me to think about it and make the right decision," Copeland said. "He coached at Tennessee before and said it's a good program." Copeland said he will announce his final decision on Wednesday, National Signing Day.

Kind of classy on Chavis's part not to bash the Tennessee program.

I always like doing things that way. I see no reason to negative recruit. It's much better to sell the positive aspects of your school compared to others.

That is the way real men, Miles and Chavis, handle a young man facing a very important decision for him.

I'm not a huge recruit-nik, but I lurk around here just to keep up with it. But I entirely agree with this statement. Negative recruiting is always a bad idea. Better to sell your school, but there's no need to badmouth another place.

Not to mention that it shows a pretty short sighted view of the way the world is.
There are MANY great universities and environments in this country, all offering a unigueness that only that program can duplicate.
Kids really need to find that place they want to be a part of with all their heart.
I will take a team full of guys that want to be here over all other programs over a team full of guys that were 'convinced' to come.

As far as Kiffin taking notes goes, I doubt it - he won't get the quality of character in the athletes that we get, though.
I think Chavis played it perfectly, because, as far as his last check-up (while he was at UT) goes, Tennessee had a good program. He makes it sound like the program was good while he was there - this would make his next stop the place to be at (LSU).
It sounds like we've got Copeland hooked. He saw our beautiful school, was treated properly and really like our staff, and he sat down to eat with some of his potential future teammates. With all of this happening so late in the game and with his verbal to UT being soft to begin with, I think it's very safe to say that J.C. Copeland with be a TIGER in 2 days!

I got that confused as well. In my mind I read LaRose. There is a LaGrange in NC, but I hadn't really considered the one in Georgia...

I really like Copeland. If we lose him to you guys I hope he pans out, he seems like a good kid.
Of course he would seem like a slightly better kid if he stuck with Tennessee.
