had a muffaletta there friday afternoon ... outstanding in my limited muffaletta experience .. is that one the best NOLA has to offer ? or are there better ones ?

it's my personal favorite in the universe, esp if it's a little warm in the store so the oils are more loose and pronounced.

Probably, yeah.
I like NorJoes as well. Someone posted here recently (Tiger Attorney?) that, while norjoes was #2 it was still far from meeting Central grocery. I actually think it's pretty close, but give Central's the nod.

Central is the best anywhere...period.
Bosco's on the northshore is solid...someone mentioned World Deli one time...I agree.
If you have never been to Nor Joe's in Old Metairie...they have a very good one...but the real reason to go is the extensive Italian market.

Old Metairie, just to the right off Metairie Road, when you cross the train tracks coming from Orleans (don't know the name of that street).

went back for the game sunday and hit the quarter afterwards and balanced that off with shrimp tempura on a stick and an abita amber draft in the biggest cup i've ever seen in my life ... got me a lucky dog on the way out of town .. i was in heaven ...
central grocery muffaleta
shrimp tempura
lucky dog
cold abita

You can rail against me for being "inauthentic" if you like, but I prefer my muffs heated.
Central Grocery is, IMO, slightly overrated for as a sandwich shop and way underrated as a grocery. They have some really cool stuff there (though expensive!)

no, i think that often times what we are served is TOO cold. think about it. The muff originated well before places had air conditioning. They used cured meats, sturdy cheeses and sturdy bun, and salty oil cured salad for a reason....so it could stand up to the heat, be enjoyed at room temp in a warm climate, and lended itself to being premade. Now, with a/c being in use everywhere i have had LOTS of cold, dry, boring muffs. I would say slightly heated is closer to "authentic" than these cold abominations.
premade muff at warm room temp > heated muff >>>> made to order muffs served with chilled ingredients at a heavily air conditioned room temp.

What happened to the old poster on here (are at least the rant & OT) who used to make the Central muffs? Can't remember his name, but recall seeing him in there before. He still there?
