A confedaracy of Dunces as a movie

In the process of reading the book and thought it would be a great movie. Googled it and discovered some interesting things. For you that don't know the author committed suicide and the book was published posthumously.
quote:
There have been repeated attempts to turn the book into a film. In 1982, Harold Ramis was to write and direct an adaptation starring John Belushi and Richard Pryor, but Belushi's death would prevent this. Later, John Candy and Chris Farley were touted for the lead, both of whom died at an early age, leading many to ascribe a curse to the role.[3]
British performer and writer Stephen Fry was at one point commissioned to adapt Toole's book for the screen.[4] He was sent to New Orleans by Paramount Studios in 1997 to get background for a screenplay adaptation.[5]
A version adapted by Steven Soderbergh and Scott Kramer, and slated to be directed by David Gordon Green, was scheduled for release in 2005. The film was to star Will Ferrell as Ignatius and Lily Tomlin as Ignatius's mother. A staged reading of the script took place at the 8th Nantucket Film Festival, with Ferrell as Ignatius, Anne Meara as his mother, Paul Rudd as Officer Mancuso, Kristen Johnston as Lana Lee, Mos Def as Burma Jones, Rosie Perez as Darlene, Olympia Dukakis as Santa Battaglia and Miss Trixie, Natasha Lyonne as Myrna, Alan Cumming as Dorian Green, John Shea as Gonzales, Jesse Eisenberg as George, John Conlon as Claude Robichaux, Jace Alexander as Bartender Ben, Celia Weston as Miss Annie, Miss Inez & Mrs. Levy, and Dan Hedaya as Mr. Levy.[6]
Various reasons are cited as to why the movie has yet to be filmed. They include disorganization and lack of interest at Paramount Pictures, the head of the Louisiana State Film Commission being murdered, and the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina on New Orleans.[3] When asked why the film was never made, Will Ferrell has said it is a "mystery." that is crazy.... I was wondering the same thing earlier in the year why the most famous and well written southern satire had never been adapted to the screen...
good find. kind of eerie though

Interesting post. I love this book, and I do think this one could be adapted successfully. I am scared, though, that they would just screw this one up like most of the other Hollywood adaptations. Ignatius on screen successfully would be epic. But Will Ferrell? I don't like that choice. I really like the rest of that cast and crew though.

exactly what i was thinking as i read this, but i really think it would be better if they didn't go mainstream for the role. WF is a horrible choice.

maybe steve carell?
IMO the character has to be large, its too critical to who the character is.

Possibly, still slim though and he's got to rock a mustache. I don't think you need a comedian to play the role.

I'm elated this died. I could put together a better cast consisting of my closest friends and family members.

After seeing Ron Jeremy's stellar work in Orgazmo I always thought he would be perfect as Ignatius.

He'd be great. Stephen Root could be great, too, though how he played it might be too close to his "Excuse me, but I believe you have my stapler" character.
By the way, thank God none of those got made. Will Ferrell is horrible, but John Belushi and John Candy wouldn't have been much better. And I don't know that Harold Ramis's style would have been right for it, either.
