A common theme on ESPN these days is "How are the SAINTS 25th Ranked D going to stop the Colts!?"

If you look at overall defense, the Saints are indeed ranked 25th but then the Giants are tied for 13th?

These numbers can be deceiving, especially in the SAINTS' case where teams are playing catch-up and racking up garbage yards and pts. The real indicator is how QBs perform against the SAINTS:

AVG QB RATING vs. SAINTS: 67.36
AVG QB RATING of SAINTS opponents: 80.08
AVG QB RATING vs. SAINTS w/ Porter and Greer Healthy: 56.8
AVG QB RATING vs. SAINTS without Porter and Greer Healthy: 94.74

AVG QB RATING vs. SAINTS against COMMON OPPONENTS WITH COLTS: 51.36
AVG QB RATING vs. COLTS against COMMON OPPONENTS WITH SAINTS: 81.6

AVG QB RATING vs. COLTS: 78.44
AVG QB RATING of COLTS' opponents: 81.7

And the best rated defense in the NFL?

AVG QB RATING vs. JETS: 68.37
AVG QB RATING of JETS' opponents: 81.65

Worst performance of the year came against the SAINTS:

Stafford - 27.4
Kolb - 73.2
Ryan - 46.6
Freeman - 33.1
Favre - 70 (avg. 107.2)

Second worst performance of the year against the SAINTS:

Sanchez - 27 (rating against Colts: 78.25)
Brady - 55 (rating against Colts: 110.7)

Notice that with Porter and Greer healthy, the SAINTS on average are holding QBs to 11.57 pts less than the league leading JETS.

Also notice the COLTS D allows QBs to perform at about their average level.

Who dat says da SAINTS D can't stop them COLTS!?

One final note: Saints are 15-0 when Shockey is in the starting line-up.

Excellent post. These numbers are very telling and very significant given that Indy is a one-dimensional passing offense.

Has anyone run the numbers on our second half defense? That seems to be when Manning starts to break down defenses.

That's a good question. It seems like our worst quarter is the first quarter. I believe the Saints lead the league in most points scored and least point allowed in the 4th quarter.

Joe Theismann said on the NFL network, "In 40 years I've never seen a QB beaten up as bad as Brett Favre was against the SAINTS!"

And this is coming from a guy who had his leg snapped in 2...

I see this game following a very similar pattern to the Vike's game. Fast start by both teams... followed by some defensive adjustment... then a flurry of scoring opportunities at the end.

As long as Shockey remains healthy and the SAINTS can maintain the double-tight-end set, I think they will score throughout the entire game.

Shockey hasn't been healthy and won't be healthy for the game.

Yeah, it looks that way. Is there any news on that?

Maybe this is a dumb question <I really don't know the answer>, can the Saints only sign a TE from their practice squad for the SB?
