I think you would want a Center who has above average footwork and speed and one that can get to the second level and track down LBs to block. They help out on double teams a lot. For example, they snap the ball, help one of the guards with a double team, and then run out to make blocks on backers. Centers are also responsible for calling out protections to pick up blitz packages and often seem to be the OLman that picks up blitzing backers.

class of 2012 recruit for center: Thomas Tomeny from CHS-Baton Rouge
very strong, 250 lbs and could be a 3-year starter for Bears.
Also he made 1st-team all district

But against a 3 4 defense he will be getting punked by the nose tackle.

Against a 3-4 NT it's not like he doesn't have help.

Footwork. The Center actually looses a step compared to Guards and Tackles because they take their step when the center hikes the ball. The Center has to hike the ball, make sure the QB takes the ball and then he can make his first step.

As for the 3-4 defenses. The guard's help if there is a huge NT or the center just has to use leverage, again where it helps to be shoreter and again lighter.

If the NT is playing a 2 gap 3-4, his job is not to bullrush the center. His job is to control the gabs on either side of the center, occupy the center and guard and let the LBs come in and clean up.

One gap 3-4 NT is suspect to a cut-back runner if he just keeps bullrushing the center.

Regardless, a 3-4 DL is supposed to plug up the gaps and let the LBs clean-up.

Look at two former LSU players and you may get my drift.

Rudy Niswanger at a little over 6'5", by most, too tall to play center, does well in the Pros.
Todd McClure at 6'1", a little too short to play in the NFL. How many guys do you have starting in the NFL on the OL at 6'1"?
Kevin Mawae is around his 17th. year, how many OL do you have in the NFL for that many years?

With the OC position, its more about technique. It you ever watch Todd Mc and he is one of the better to keep an eye on during a game. He will move a player when needed. He will let a DL go away from the play, or let him overrun a play.
LSU has three of the better OC in the NFL, two you could say, may be playing out of position. But in this day and time, in the NFL, the OC is one of the more valueable positions on the field.

Todd's looking to play a couple more years in the NFL and I hope he makes it.
People keep asking how long will Kevin go? Don't know, but he is another one I'm pulling for every year.

Same here. Last word I got, Brett Helms was on the developmental squad for the Houston Texans.

Makes sense. He's just like McClure in a lot of ways. Shorter, undersized, but knows how to play smart... and his size can be hidden a little bit in that zone blocking scheme that Kubiak runs.

Another example of a great center is Dwight Stephenson who play with the Dolphins and Bama.

Always considered small in comparison to the giant guards and tackles but was an absolute anchor to the Phins offensive line.

In a bit of a twist, the Eagles probably have the biggest center in the NFL. He's about 6'3, weighs 330.
