...if Benson wanted to sell High?
Money's probably not a big issue for him, but seems that owners always sell a franchise when things are bad.
Benson is over 80 years old...it's only a matter of time....

I think Forbes had the franchise valued at $800 million last I saw. Which is alot I thought since they don't own The Superdome. The Redskins an Cowboys are worth the most largely to their ownership of the stadiums.

I guess you're not aware but basically after Tags bitch slapped Tom and told him he wasn't moving the Saints anywhere, his grand daughter became a lot more conspicuously involved with the team. When he moves on she will be running the show, and so far that looks like a good thing.

So being like a billion dollars in debt makes you more valuable?

It's amazing how much value this franchise has gained COMPLETELY IN SPITE OF that old bastard, Benson.
But for Tagliabue, he'd be floundering in San Antonio right now, lucky to be drawing 35,000 fans per game.

So the success of our team right now is in spite of benson. What a jack off.

I'll bet if you had 2 Billion you could buy the team off of him.
Estimated worth may be between 800m-1.2B but what would it take to buy the team?
I know Benson wants to keep ownership in his family, but everyone has a price.

Do you realize how badly he was itching to move the team after Katrina? He had all but completely moved his operations to San Antonio.
As the other poster said, it essentially took Tagliabue demanding that the NFL was absolutely not going to allow it, for him to stay in New Orleans.

That's what they're worth on paper but there's no way they'd sell for close to market value. There are only 32 NFL teams which have done nothing but rise in value astronomically (and make money year over year), and seemingly anybody who is in the market to buy one could easily move the franchise to Los Angeles and overnight it would be worth over $1 Billion on paper.
So therefore I don't think any franchise sells for under $1 Billion - even the Rams or Vikings - teams with horrible stadium issues.
Also - Benson has stated in the past (pre-Katrina) that he turned down at least offer of $1 billion for the Saints. The prospective buyer presumably wanted to move them to Los Angeles.

Yes, but he only was doing it because he thought that was his best business future for the team seeing that our damn city was a frick nut. But just because he did that doesn't mean it isn't to his credit of what's been done with our team since Katrina.

Owning billion dollar real estate does.
When you buy a home you pay based off the value of the house (crime, quality of schools nearby, etc) not how much the owner still owed on the house.

Oh, I'm not really disagreeing with that.
I just think a lot of this is due to the lucky foresight of Tagliabue, saving Benson from his own kneejerk stupidity.

Well, why wouldn't the same team be having the same success in San Antonio?

Real estate is only worth what you can sell it for.

Because you can't assume with a completely different setting and set of circumstances, that there would be completely the same decisions that would have been made.
A lot of things fortuitously fell in place for this team. I think a lot of that had to do with them staying put and not uprooting everything as Benson had originally wanted. Hell, it was clear he was itching to get out well before Katrina.

You're right, you can't assume anything if team was moved. So, you can stop assuming they wouldn't be having the success they are having now. He would have same coach, same GM, probably same players, Miami Dolphins still would have declined the offer on Drew Brees, he probably still would have went to the Saints. So, Tom Benson is one of the biggest reasons for our franchises success. The only mess up Benson did was Ditka and he fired him and moved on. 3 of the 4 coaches he hired has been to the playoffs and were named Coaches of the Year in the NFL. He has had great runs with the Saints since he's owned them in the mid 80's.
