How To Beat The Cardinals, From A Niner Fan

Yeah yeah. Aside from being a Poli Board tool, I'm a huge 49er fan. Have been for years. Tune in to all of their games and watch them suck. So, keep the Niner bashing out of this. I'm here to help.
Since the 2007 season, my sorry arse Niners have won 4 or the last six games against the Cards, including a season sweep this year. Last year, the Niners gave the Cards a solid game on MNF with friggin Shaun Hill as the starting QB. For some reason, the Whiners match up well with Arizona, however, the formula for beating the Cards is simple, really.
Here it is:
PUT WARNER'S arse ON THE GROUND.
I don't care how you do it, I don't care when you do it, just friggin do it. Yeah, you may give up a long pass, but hit him hard. That's the formula.
When the Niners beat Zona this year, they mixed up their defenses during the game. You didn't see anything like what GB did yesterday. Sitting in a zone on a few plays is fine, but sitting in a zone on EVERY play will get you stomped.
The Niners generally approach Zona with a mix of 3-4 and 4-3 looks simply because they have the personnel to do this. The saints being primarily a 4-3 team will have to incorporate more blitzes.
Here is where it gets fun, because I believe G. Williams WILL blitz Warner. When you blitz, blitz up the middle where Warner can see you coming, then watch him (and Leinart, if he has to play) simply crumble. It truly is amazing to watch this happen. IF you are able to knock him down, sack him, cause him to fumble, or cause him to throw ONE pick, he's off the entire rest of the game. I'm not joking. I watched it happen twice this year.
The other weakness on the Cardinal line is their left side. The Niners absolutely abused them with a bigger DE rushing the QB. GB did not have this yesterday. Justin Smith, who is worthless unless we are playing Arizona, earns his money against the Cardinals. The Saints are vastly superior to the 9ers on the ends, so look for pressure here also.
Outside of that, double Fitz and take your chances with Doucet, Breaston, and their slow TE. I think the Saints DBs can hold their own with these matchups, but again, this will depend on IF Warner is on the ground.
As far as the AZ run game, I don't think the Saints will have much difficulty here. Now, I know that is cause for concern for Saints fans, but again, mixing up the looks, and sure tackling, will keep Zona from running. And trust me, they prefer to throw the ball. I'm convinced they would throw it 80% of the time if they could.
Yes, Warner will throw for 200+ yards, and yes, he will get at least one passing TD. But he is fragile. Very fragile. Hit him long, hit him hard, and late in the game, he will literally drop to the ground if he thinks pressure is coming. I've seen this happen twice a year for the past few years, and sometimes it is comical. I've seen players on the Whiners get credit for "sacks" by simply tapping Warner on the helmet after he hit the ground thinking someone was around him.
Good luck.
My prediction:
Saints 34
Cards 24

great post and I agree, but watch out for the trolls here that are going to claim Warner is going to shred the Saints defense.

old gray beard, aka the gloved one is going down in the worst way in the superdome

This is what I wrote down while watching the game yesterday:
-Their 3-4 defense isn't near the level of the Cowboys' which gave us fits.
-Rolle is a decent cover safety
-Rogers-Cromartie can be beat
-#27 can be abused and abused
-no dominant pass rush
-Harper will need to play a BIG role
-DBs don't tackle well. Look for Meachum to bust a long one
-AZ loves the seams of the defense....#41 and #41 better come to play!
-AZ WRs are BEASTS! hope Boldin is still hurt!

And he very well may do that for a short period of time.
But again, the key is to hit him, even if he is succesful. If they complete a 50 yard pass in the 1Q, but Warner is on his arse and can't see the play, it will make a difference later.

Haven't seen you flame on this board, so you'll get no Niner bashing.

so true
but pretty good scouting report and thanks for the good luck

Its not earth shattering to know you have to hit warner in the mouth early and often.

I won't flame the Saints, ever.
About 90% of my friends are Saints fans. I just feel bad for those guys. I really do.
I called my buddy after the Philly game this year (week 2) and told him I thought this was The Year of the Saint. I'm sticking with it.
Hell, I even drafted the Saints D on my FF team and was laughed at by the entire league. That pick carried my FF team all year.

fwiw i like Greer and Porter against any WR combo.

No. The Cowboys 3-4 is the best in the NFC, with the Niners 3-4 next. Not being a homer, but the Niners' problems aren't on D.

Rolle is a decent cover safety
Decent, at best. He too gets frustrated easily. He got away with a late hit yesterday, which was amazing, but indicitive of his play.
quote:
Rogers-Cromartie can be beat
Yup. Crabtree did it several times, but Alex Smith was only able to get him the ball once on target. LOL

That's Mike Adams. Former 49ers. Notice I said "former". When Singletary took over, Adams was one of the first to sit.

no dominant pass rush
Nope.

Yup, Bracket coverage with a blitz....

I watched the whole Niners/Cards game on MNF, and I agree with you that once he throws a bad pass or a pick he is off for the rest of the game. If we can get him off his game early in the dome I dont see him making big plays like he did against GB.
Posted on 1/11/10 at 3:37 pm to EZE Tiger Fan
I have no doubt that Greg Williams is going to bring some nasty blitz packages this week.

Great, this really is, I appreciate the effort, but what are we supposed to do with it now?

Saints actually beat the Bills staying in the 3-4 the entire game, defense pitched a shutout (they scored a special teams TD).
Good post, otherwise. I wish we'd have had a game to get it going, but I'm ecstatic to see our secondary back in place. I think they're going to give up big plays. It's impossible not to against this WR corps. But they won't let the yardage/scoring get out of hand and they'll force two or three turnovers I think.

This is the post of the year so far on the Saints board. Nice job.

Blitz up the middle early and often.
There is no better joy than seeing the opposing QB fall on the ground later in the game simply because he "feels" pressure. Warner will do this. As much as I think Warner is a great QB, he literally "crumbles under pressure".

I get that that is what the team needs to do, but us fans unfortunately don't have much control over that.
