Gary Crowton Story

Pretty interesting.

Gary Crowton's "Razzle Dazzle Offense" 1999-2000: Kansas City Chief head coach Gunther Cunningham's words were prophetic following an opening day loss to the Bears in 1999. "This razzle-dazzle offense, once it's figured out, won't be anything." Crowton certainly put some dazzle in a historically bland Bears offense. A longtime college coach, Crowton's offense featured five wide receivers and the shotgun on first down, tight ends split out wide, receivers lining up at running back, to three tight end sets. And Crowton blew the NFL away with his wide receiver screens, thrown to young, emerging receivers such as Marcus Robinson and Marty Booker for long scores. Soon the entire NFL was using Crowton's signature play. Though Crowton's passing game ranked 3rd in the NFL, best of any Bear team in the modern era, it had a problem. It racked up huge yards but didn't score consistently, as Chicago ranked 25th in that category with 17 points per game. Prior to the 2000 season Crowton crowed (sorry) that he was just getting his offense in gear in his second season, and began to install heavy pre-snap motion packages. Then thanks to the NFL doing just what Cunningham had predicted, along with poor QB play from Cade McNown, the razzle-dazzle offense ground to a halt. And Crowton departed before the end of the season to take over as head coach at Brigham Young University. Crowton was fired from BYU following the 2004 season and now is offensive coordinator at LSU. Booth or Sideline? Crowton alternated between the booth and the sideline, depending on his feel for that particular game.

Mora wanted a ball controle offence to keep his defence off the field. He got what he deserved.

Crowton needs a QB that can run his offense and that means throw it on time and read Defenses. He had 2 NFL QB's at Tech and Matt Flynn and JR. JJ just does not look confident in the offense. But JJ did stop the TO's at the QB position.

Trust me. I want him to succeed too. He is very capable of turning things around with the right quarterback and better o-line.

Everything is a flash in the pan except for good offensive line play and a strong running game. How well is Spurrier doing now? He of the Fun-n-Gun? Alabama used the old playbook this year. Strong D and a great running game. Looked pretty damn good to me.

This echoes my thoughts exactly - Miles/Crowton/Frank/Gonzo these are all transient people and I don't care about them per se except in that if they succeed at LSU that means that we are doing great.
Even if Miles is not going to be our long term choice , I would still prefer him to win each year rather than hope he flames and burns down and loses 6 games and gets forced out - because the wins are not just his - they are LSU's W/L as well.

Spurrier's fun and gun was designed to get a WR to an open spot, not a qb reading and making great plays, hence the qb's with candy arse arms that did well or were pretty stupid and still did well.

Look, the offense, the way it was run, WILL NOT WORK.
But, to our good fortune, it can be adjsuted to throw out all the pre-snap bs and subs and be made to be more tailored to the talented position players.
Trust me, him staying shows the ground rules have been layed for how we will move forward and dumb it down. He tried to make too many of the decisions out of the qb's hands because of lack of experience, and it was a problem.

How many teams' players, when interviewed after the game, indicated they knew what LSU was going to do with the formations and personnel packages they had in at the time.
That says so much about both the QB and the offensive concept.
HUGE FAIL on both counts.
