Indian and Ethiopian Food

Here in DC, I have noticed tons of Ethiopian restaurants, as well as a lot of Indian restaurants.
I have eaten very little Indian and no Ethiopian food. We want to try one of these restaurants but have no idea how/what to order. What do you like at these places?

I love ethiopian food. I've been to Zed's and most recently Fasil. I usually go with any lamb dish. The stews will come on injera and that is your utensil and plate. Prepare to be blown away.

The Ethiopian restaurants I've been at feature killer vegetarian foods...and I'm no where near being a vegetarian.

THere are two on Adams Morgan and one on U street that I really like....Zed's is a good stepping stone into Ethiopian. It is more Americanized...not so much the food, but the atmosphere....than the ones I am speaking of...
I ate it once a week or so while in DC....it is my favorite ethnic cuisine...I would kill to have one in NOLA.
I suspect that it will be the next cuisine (sushi, thai, vietnamese) to get marketed to the masses as the "in" cuisine....hopefully that will merit new orleans getting a restaurant.

I've had ethiopian food a few times when I was younger but don't recall much of it.
I'm ashamed I passed on the opportunity to check out some of the places in L.A.
And I recently read an article that supports what you're saying. They basically said that in America Ethiopian will become the "new Indian" as far as availability of the cuisine goes. Hopefully you're right.

I hate when cuisines and cultures get "pimped out," but if it merits getting an establishment down here, then I am for it.

I would be remiss if I failed to mention that DC has the largest Ethiopian population in America so you are really getting to try some of the best around when you eat it up there. I have only been to ones in ATL, Houston, and NYC...my DC experiences were better (not to say the others were bad by any stratch of the imagination).

Well if you ever go to Los Angeles, pass by 3rd and Fairfax. There is about 10 Ethiopian joints on one block. The entire street is Ethiopian restaurants and Jewish thrift stores.

I don't know much about Ethiopian but I can point you in the right direction for Indian
One thing that is a must is Naan bread and if they have kheer (rice pudding) for dessert order it.
If they have butter chicken definitely order that. Other more popular favorites are tikki masala, sagwala dishes (spinach), curries, etc...
You could also get a mixed grill type thing at most of these places but I'd recommend getting something with a sauce so you can soak it up with the naan bread.
If you like vegetarian dishes most Indian places will have some awesome eggplant dish or you could get a veggie korma (a korma is a mild curry)

That is my kind of city block.
I need to make it out to LA on business...almost had a file which would have required me to get out there...then I went and settled it

can sum it up on one word: Curry.
I went to England last year and every other restaurant is Indian food. Just meat and rice basically (decent)

Pre-Katrina there was an Ethiopian restaurant on Earhart Blvd near Carrollton. Food was OK, but loved the Ethiopian beer.
