I usually get pissed at how badly they lowball the owners of genuinely valuable shite and then pat themselves on the back for the 30k+ profit they made off of it.

The Shelby chassis was the worst, when they tried to tell the owner to not to be greedy for wanting more than half of the current value because it got the thing for "free."

I understand that they can't pay market, but anything less than 60% of current value is a complete joke

i must have missed the part where they put a gun to the sellers heads and make them sell. they're in business to make money, if the idiots agree with the low-ball price, they are idiots.

You do realize it's a business, right? Pawn shops are there to make the most profit they can, bottom line, just like any other business. If the owners of the property are dumb enough to sell it for that price, it's fair game.

That being said, Pawn Stars is awesome.

What are you talking about? The people are uninformed idiots, have the time they have an expert come in and tell them how much its worth right in front of them. If they wanted they could get an expert to look at it and then not have the people there and lowball the frick out of them. Also they just say what they COULD get for it, they have never showed how much they actually sold it for.

With that said, it would be an extremely interesting job and i love the old man.

it is the pawn stars that are being the experts in. How exactly is the custumer supposed to lowball THEM? "I had a guy tell me it was worth x"

They probably won't believe you and get their own expert anyway, and even if they didn't, they trust your guys assessment less than what they would trust from their own, leading to a LOWER offer

not to say that the folks don't aproach it stupidly many times, but I felt when the owner went down to 40 on a 60k chassis, and the prawnies brought up how he had gottten it for free in an eviction...low.

uh, it's called negotiation... the guy could have said F U and rebuilt it himself and made a cook hundred G's.

if you brought me something and you didn't know it's worth, that's your fault.

once you step in the door to a pawn shop looking to get a decent price for anything you're an idiot. it just screams desperation and they know it. sell the shite on ebay or at auction or whatever if you want to get anything close to what your item is "worth"

Don't get me wrong. The end responsibility is with the owner. I've said before they make their living on the ones who don't care enough to walk away.

But it seems to be a recurring counter argument that the customers are morons. My reply is that it isn't a revelation...but I don't have to pat on the back those who exploit them do I?

I would like to see a follow up on some of the stuff that they bought and see how much it sold for and how long it took to sell.

You misread that. What he said was that the shop could bring in an expert without the owner being there then tell the owner it was worth half of what it actually was.

i've never seen them keep stuff then go check it. they always make another appointment and have the expert there. i don't think they're trying to blindly screw people, but if one of the idiots agrees to sell (and even after an expert says it's worth $x) then it's on them. i don't think the shop owners are running a charity... they do their due diligence in front of the seller.

they do lowball a lot of folks, but you gotta realize some of these goods may take some extra time to turnover. maybe months to sale. you know what you're getting when you go to a shop.

Ah gotcha.

Well, FWIW, they do do that sometimes. The plane was the best example of this.

But yeah, I see where you mean.

Wouldn't be surprised if that is what happens normally. It only changes for TV.
