With all of the funding, facilities, talent, support, etc. that our football program has and should have for the forseeable future, is it unreasonable to expect the following over the next 10 years:

3-4 SEC West Championships
2 SEC Championships
1 National Championship
3 BCS Bowl appearances w/ at least 2 wins
7-3 overall bowl record

Go ahead an crucify me

I would say LSU is in the top 15 in spending, revenue, facilities, recruiting, etc.....so it shouldn't be too lofty of expectations.

While it's incredible to do, a NC should never be "expected." It's the ultimate bonus.

Simply put, it's unreasonable to expect from someone something that they are incapable of. That's what's so frustrating about Alleva wanting to keep Miles. It's like putting your 2-year-old in charge of balancing your checkbook. The 2-year-old isn't to blame when checks start bouncing, YOU are. Alleva and the powers that be should be competent enough to realize he ISN'T competent enough to run an elite football program.

And as for the fans who want to keep Miles, well...it's unreasonable to expect reason from someone who isn't capable of it.

I think it's unreasonable to EXPECT any of those things.

I do think it's reasonable to expect to be in the HUNT for all of those. Championships are hard to come by...even for the most funded and well run programs. But with LSU's funding and recruiting base it stands to reason that LSU would be in a position to challeneg for the SECW title nearly every year, which would mean being in a position to win the SEC title and an auto to a BCS bowl. And more often than not, a team that wins the SEC is likely to be in a good shot to play for the NC.

LSU must contend for the west year in and year out...bottom line.

That's not the attitude at Florida. That's why Florida is in position to win its third national championship in four years.

We are in the top 10 in all of those. If we had a top 10 caliber coach, the performance on the field would match the resources.

Nailed it -- in the hunt for those things is reasonable -- expecting to actually win them is probably unreasonable.

fan expectations has nothing to do with Florida's on field performance. They are trying to win the games regardless of what the fans think. Outrageous/unrealistic fan expectations are why Spurrier left in the first place.

You're nuts if you really think that. He left for the challenge to coach in the NFL and a boatload more money.

So it's the attitude that has put them in a position to do that?

BAMA has had that attitude for decades...hasn't helped them win dick since the 1990's.

Based on the sample of the last five years that's exactly what you'd get, in fact better (e.g., 10-0 in bowls).

But that depends on a coach getting the time, space, and support to last 10 years.

Bear Bryant won a couple championships in the sixties but then closed out the decade with a couple 8-3 seasons followed by a couple 6-5 seasons. No doubt in today's SEC he doesn't survive that. However, he went on to change his ways, in particular he gave up on the idea of an all-white football team and implemented the wishbone. He won some more championships.

The best coaches adapt. See Les Miles' last offseason. See Sean Payton's last offseason. Compare to Mora and Dinardo. Usually, in the course of that adaptation, though, there will be some rebuilding, some weaknesses exposed, and some misfires. Not every year can be a championship year, anywhere, not even at Bear Bryant's Alabama.

Honestly, with Les here the only thing realistic here is the 7-3 bowl record (but what bowl?). I don't think he can compete with Saban or Meyer as long they are in the SEC. They are just better coaches in every way. I can see Miles struggling in the SEC over the next 10 years (if he is kept). Something just above a 500 record in the SEC. Maybe like 45-35 over 10 years. I think Saban would go about 8-2 against Miles in 10 years. Probably Urban Meyer goes 9-1 against Miles in 10 years. LSU will likely have losing records to Arkansas and Ole Miss if their coaches stay the same. Maybe 500 or so against Auburn. With Miles maybe 1-2 SEC West titles in next 10 years and no SEC titles as long as Saban and Meyer are there. He can't beat them both in a year.

It's helped them go 24-0 the last two regular seasons. They didn't put up with mediocrity, they fired coaches who produced it, and when the replacements didn't fix the problem, they kept firing them until they got a good one. They even fired two coaches less than a year after an SEC title or 10-win, top 10 season...and both were Bama alums!

It's very simple. You get what you demand and expect. At Florida and Alabama, they demand and expect top-level elite success, and they eventually get it. Schools that don't demand or expect it don't get it. If a coach can go .500 in SEC play for a two-year stretch and not be in danger of losing his job, why would he bother to do any better?
