Alabama/Auburn, Texas/A&M, Oregon/Oregon St., OU/Okie State

I don't know about anyone else, but for me, rivalries like these a bigger than Michigan/Ohio State and Texas/OU. There is just something about the in-state rivalries that can't be matched. The winning team has bragging rights around the office, around the school, around the whole state for an entire year. I know, for example, there are Michigan fans who live in Ohio and vise versa, but I just don't think it is as good of a rivalry as some of the other in-state rivalries.
That's the reason why I think Alabama/Auburn is the best rivalry in college football.

The only one on that list that can compare to OSU/Michigan is Bama/Auburn (I do think the Civil War is an underrated rivalry, though). And whichever one's bigger just depends on who you ask.

I am slightly bias but Apple Cup will always be one the top ones. I can remember years where Washington was running away to the Rose Bowl and horrible Washington State program upset them. They have things all week for Apple Cup. Good or bad it is usually an entertaining game. This year will mark their 102nd meeting.

Michigan-Ohio State is by far the most overhyped and overrated game every single year. I mean outside of those 2 states, 98.9% of our nation's population could give a damn about this shitfest.

Even though you're definitely exaggerating, I'm sure you mean that outside the fanbases, it's really not a huge deal. Isn't that the same with every rivalry?

FWIW, I'm hoping this thread doesn't become Ohio State fans having to defend their rivalry because other people come in and criticize it. It's a great rivalry, no matter what anyone says.

I think the rivalies you mention are all great ones; and to say one is greater than another will never wash with the fans of the teams involved. To try to say which is the biggest is difficult, that's what makes CFB so great. I enjoy watching the Bama/Auburn game every year and OU/TX, USC/UCLA and others. BTW I respect them all. The only true in-State rivalry we have in the Big10 is MSU/UM which has been over shadowed by UM's games with ND and OSU.

I think it provides two different takes.
As you mentioned, the in-state rivalries you have to deal with at work, and often, it's literally brother against brother, husband against wife, etc.
At the same time, though, out of state rivalries are state vs state, which can be personal. In Ohio/Michigan's case, the two states have technically gone to war, before.

I like certain in-state rivalries better just because I prefer the in-state rivalry and the bragging rights in-state, but all of them are great.

Agreed they are rivalries but I don't think they have the significance that others do that rise to the level of in state bragging rights. For example, when was the last time IU filled it up at home when they played Purdue? This is not true in basketball where there is a fiecie in state rivalry and people do look for bragging rights after a game - not so much in football. With respect to Illinois - Northwestern; until recently Northwestern had been the door mat and the series had been very lopsided. The game was typically one for the win column for the Illini. My perspective goes back to the late 60's so I may have a differnt take on it. The MSU-UM game was always a big game in MI. Just my opinion.
