The best individual season in sports history?

Sanders rushed for 2,628 yards, an NCAA record.

He had 3,249 total yards, an NCAA record.

Sanders scored 39 TDs (37 rushing, 1 kick return, 1 punt return), an NCAA record.

He averaged 7.6 yards per carry.

He rushed for 300+ yards in four games.

That was during the 11-game regular season. In the Holiday Bowl against Wyoming, he ran for 222 yards and 5 TDs. In three quarters. He sat out the fourth, as OSU won 62-14.

I would say yes for College Football history of course. It's hard to compare the accomplishment to professional ones though.

He played in a BCS level league.

He was far and away the most deserving Heisman winner in my lifetime.

It cracks me up when Georgia fans say Herschel Walker is the best college running back of all time.

That one season is why I've always maintained that Barry Sanders was the greatest College RB of all time. He only played one year after sitting behind All-American and future NFL Hall of Famer for his first 2 years but his quality was unlike anything the college game had ever and still ever seen to this day.

IMO him and Jerry Rice are the two best football players of all time at any position.

Nothing funny about the truth.

Walker played 3 years, Sanders 1.

Sanders had the greatest season, Walker the better career.

Herschel Walker also didn't back up an All American. Walker can't hold Sander's jockstrap.

Yeah Sanders 1988 is unbeatable.

The only thing I can combat that would be Troy Davis 1995-1997 at Iowa St. Back to back 2,000 rushing yard seasons. Never won the Heisman though. But even that, IMO pales in comparison to the greatness that was Barry.

If you are the GOAT, shouldn't you beat out a mere AA?

UGA was 33-3 in Walker's 3 years, 2 of their loses to were to team that won the NC.

ETA: nevermind

You can legitimately argue Sanders is better, but this is pure tardism. If you are a Bama fan, you sound like a biased tard, hating on UGA fans I'm all for a good discussion if you want, but spare me stupid hyperbole.

Sanders 1 season was so insane you can argue he was better. That he couldn't beat out an older, great player is not a good argument necessarily. When ABC did the top 25 players a few years ago, Sanders was 2, Walker was 3.

even if you throw out Sanders, Davis is not in the discussion of best Big 12 RB's.

Sander's is obviously the superior running back in the NFL (where it counts IMO.)

I guess college is debatable but if i have the choice to take either back in college i'm picking Barry every single time.

Wish is bullshite because the NCAA doesnt count his bowl game in that total. Add the Bowl game to that year and his season was the following:

373 rushes, 2,850 yards, (7.6 avg), 42 TDs

Greatest Season of All-Time

Herschel was the most physically-gifted. Barry was the most talented.

I think Jim Brown and Reggie White would like to debate.

The topic of the thread was his 1988 season, he did not play in the NFL in 1988.

Unlike Walker, Sanders was able to go to the NFL as a junior. Walker had to go to the USFL or stay in college 1 more year. He was a beast in the USFL and had a couple of great years in the NFL, but clearly Sanders was a much better NFL RB.

So we need to specify the discussion. I prefer to argue college or pro when discussing great players, not both. If we are talking pros, Sanders was much better than Walker, even UGAtards could not argue that. College its debatable, I'd go with Walker over Sanders, based on length of career. It is impossible to know how teams would have fared against Sanders facing him a 2nd year and knowing what he could do. Walkers numbers don't look as good today as they did at the time and its hard to explain the impact he had if you didn't follow it at the time. Can't really go wrong either way.

The greatest FB player regardless of position is still Jim Brown
