Playing Tech

So after watching the Tech-LSU game last week it only becomes more apparent that we should never play Tech, Tulane, ULL, etc. These in-state schools are going to treat any match up with LSU like the super bowl. A piss poor Tech team almost shocked a far superior LSU team because LSU wasn't even remotely interested in the game. Season ticket holders don't want to pay money to see us play Tech, ULL, Tulane, and the like. LSU stands to gain nothing by playing these teams and could potentially lose a lot if one of these lesser programs ever shocked LSU in a game. I question why we play teams like this. Thoughts?

Money. It's all about getting to a prestigious bowl game. Teams in the BCS mix get 17 mill apiece. Teams in decent bowls get a few mill. Teams in crap bowls get 600K. You schedule the patsy's to win and become bowl eligible with a sterling record. If you scheduled USC, OSU, Penn State, and Boise State you're gonna lose as often as you win, and that's bad for business.

Why no Rice, Houston, SMU, Southern Miss? Those teams all would be decent lower caliber match ups where the team doesn't have the "superbowl" mentality these in state schools do. Why do we care about helping Tech or Tulane? Personally after hearing all these school's fans talk I just want to bury these teams.

Tech looked more beat-up to me than inspired for a Super Bowl.
LSU won't lose anything by losing to an in-state school... except penis bragging rights. The in-state school does have alot to gain though.

Why should LSU help out teams like Tech? LSU stands to gain absolutely NOTHING by playing these teams. It doesn't help BCS rankings, it doesn't bring in a good deal of money from outside of the state, and it doesn't appeal to season ticket holders to watch these games. It's not going to help in recruiting either. When LSU wins, they were supposed to. There is almost no upside to playing these teams.

Because of the reasons I've already listed. Season ticket holders from out of town aren't going to want to see these games. There will be a much smaller number of travelers from outside the state, hence less out of state revenue for Baton Rouge. These games do not help out recruiting at all. There are almost no advantages for LSU to play these games. LSU is only doing a favor to the in state teams.

neither does playing any of the other soft teams on LSU's schedule (or if it does help LSU more to play an out of state school, it doesn't help them MUCH more). You do it for easy wins. If you're saying LSU shouldn't play state schools because they get fired up about it, well maybe you need to start wondering why your coach isn't getting your team fired up for it.

I guarantee there were more people from N. La in Baton Rouge Saturday than would have been if LSU played an out-of-state school.

So carrying the state academically isn't enough?
Nah - I'm just bustin your balls. Since we aren't playing Tulane anymore, we might as well play LA Tech or ULL each year, as long as they don't expect a home and home series. Plenty of other spaces to fill in with the bottom feeders of other BCS conferences.

Why even put your team in that position? Playing teams like Houston, Rice, SMU, Southern Miss, smaller Florida schools could help LSU get exposure in these areas where LSU is expanding recruiting. This isn't an issue with in state schools. I have yet to see what LSU stands to gain playing these schools.

Recruits don't care about LSU playing Rice, SMU, or UCF.
They care about the big, nationally televised games.
