ESPN

The embattled SEC officials finally have somebody coming to their defense.

Alabama coach Nick Saban.

At his news conference Monday, Saban said the media need to get off the officials' backs and quit questioning every call that's made or isn't made.

"I mean, can somebody stand up and fight for these guys and what they do for the game?" Saban said.

Given how little officials make for the amount of criticism they've been receiving, Saban said there's no way he'd put himself through that torture.

"I'd step back and say, 'I think I'll go to the lake this weekend, you can have this,' " Saban said.

For the record, Alabama was on the receiving end of the key call in question last week in its 24-15 win over LSU.

LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson appeared to intercept a pass on the sideline during the fourth quarter. But it was called an incompletion on the field, and the replay official didn't overturn it. Alabama retained possession and moved into position for the clinching field goal.

"If it was an interception, that doesn't mean they win the game," Saban said of the Peterson play.

Just trying to defer everyone's criticism...

There's no defending the officials on this one.

He's just smart. His intimidation and reputation may earn him a few calls over the course of a season, but now he's showing compassion as well? He's a freakin' maestro.

i guess it's easy to defend the officials if they give you the favorable calls.

what a sore winner

Then you could say the same about Miles laying off the refs. Just makin' friends with the enemy.

Saban, great as he is at designing winning football teams, is still a jerk as a human being.

That's actually pretty classless of him to come out and say that.

He should just shut his mouth, be happy with his team's performance, and move on.

Speaking of lake, who is the guy that pulled his out when he bumped his head. He owes us an apology as well.

I said it another thread - he's not backing the call, just the officials.

I REALLY want to believe that these guys are on the up-and-up. I'm still giving them the benefit of the doubt.

If you watch the two officials discussing the call, they're not saying,

"Dude, do you think this is the call the Vegas mob will pay us the $500k for?"

"Yeah. I think so."

"Alrighty then - incomplete pass."

THEN ... the guy in the booth has to be with them.

They got the call wrong on the field. The video evidence is pretty conclusive, but I wouldn't risk my kids' lives on it. I would've overturned the call, but there have certainly been many, many more replay calls that were more conclusive.

I wonder if there shouldn't be 2-3 replay officials per game. Surely the SEC can afford it.

I like how the announcers talk it through when they're looking at replay evidence.

Which just gives credibility to the bashers and makes Saban look dumb and small.
