Interesting pick, unexpected, but not bad at all.
Hmmm, I like to watch how the votes come in...see what the probable number 1's will be, relatively easy to call right now, but you never know.

I didn't rank comedies on overall quality, just on how funny they were (well, quality did come into play a little bit). I think Dr. Strangelove is a better movie than just about everything on my list, but as a straight comedy, it ranked in the next 10.
Harold & Kumar is just milk come out of your nose funny. The Neil Patrick Harris scenes are now cliche, but the first time I saw them, I almost died.
I didn't rank Eternal Sunshine on the grounds I don't consider it sci fi. But I love that movie.

why would this be considered Sci-Fi? Just curious, would be #1 on my list but I don't think dystopian future = sci fi.

It isn't obviously a genre film but I think you have to qualify it as a Sci Fi movie. The cause of the conflict in the film is Lacuna Inc, which uses an experimental procedure to remove memories. I think it is as much a Sci Fi movie as The Prestige as in both a scientific innovation is what sets up the plot of the film.

Again, we are taking loose genre rules. Star Wars has laser blasters so (as much as it pains me to say) it is a sci fi. ACO takes place in an alternative past/future, so it is a sci-fi.
I would actually consider all dystopian/apocalyptic films to be a sub-genre of sci-fi, but that's me. Usually these movies change something about culture/society which leads to a prediction of things to come. Prediction of realistic consequences being a big part of the non-alien/space side of science fiction.
ACO would be very similar to Brazil, Children of Men, and other movies who are light on obvious "sci-fi" elements like extremely advanced technology, and are more based on a "What if?" scenario. The "What If?" question being central to the science fiction debate often.

So Star Wars is Sci Fi now?!?!

Now I have to rethink my whole list.

I agree that dystopia is a genre of sci-fi (and my personal favorite). But I think what sets Eternal Sunshine apart is that it is so fantastical, it is not really sci fi, it is fantasy. It’s not really supposed to be grounded in reality at all, its just a way to explore the subconscious. It’s closer to Being John Malkovich or Synecdoche, NY than science fiction (yes, I know those are both Kaufman films as well).

Although we will not put limits on what is or isn't a genre fulfilling film (Star Wars isn't a science fiction film), give it some thought at least. Comedies are easy, science fiction is a tough genre though.
You may have misinterpreted. I will edit out the confusion. Sorry, that was meant as an aside, not as a rule.
FWIW, no problem just edit your original post. I hanve't tallied anything yet.

And if we were really strict, the current and obvious number 1 sci-fi by my count isn't even a sci-fi considering substance. It is a horror film, so even I am often not a genre purist. The debate is even smaller than Star Wars. I think ACO is more "genre specific" than Alien or Eternal Sunshine.
Which is why I often enjoy sci-fi more than anything else, it combines a lot of elements. Pure drama (Children of Men), Comedy (Dr. Strangelove or Brazil), social commentary (ACO, Brazil, etc.), and pure fun (Body Snatchers)

It is close to Being John Malkovich and Synedoche, NY but that is due to it being a Kaufman film. But unlike his other films, there was no magic or fantastical elements that cause the events in Eternal Sunshine to occur. Think of it as the inverse Star Wars. Star Wars tells a fantasy story with the trappings and setting of science fiction whereas ES tells a science fiction story with the trappings and setting of contemporary fantasy/neosurrealism.

Well, what makes Alien such a good sci fi film is that it creates an interesting world grounded in our current reality. They spend good portions of the movie bitching about pay and other such blue collar concerns.
Oops. Getting ahead of ourselves.

That makes sense, and i realized I'm a dumbass, since I included The Running Man on my list , but for some reason wasn't thinking of ACO as sci-fi.
I see the purist point about Star Wars and don't disagree and left that off as Fantasy/Space Opera. If you'd asked me if SW was SF about 5 years ago I'd have said yes, but it doesn't offend me that you and others say its not. I know some people freak out about that.
I was a little worried I would have enough with out SW to make a good list. There are lots of highly praised SF movies like The Presitage that regrettably I haven't seen. (Of course one of the reasons I come to this board is to learn about movies I might not have heard about). so my SF list may be a little more light wieght than some. I will rethink with the dystopian sub genre and may add Fahrenheit 451.

But The Running Man includes some obvious "sci-fi" elements, hence your initial connection with it as sci-fi. Children of Men has no visual sci-fi elements. No laser blasters, no aliens, no advanced technology. Nothing. It's the premise that is purely science fiction.

Laser Blasters

I know some people freak out about that.
People who have a very superficial notion of science fiction. And people who obviously miss the very first frame of the film...Lucas isn't ashamed to set it up as a fairy tale...
"A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..."
Ok back to voting....seems a little light on votes this time around.
And I thought the director list would be tough to get interest in.

How many of these voting things have been done on here?
I'd be happy to do a blurb if a movie from one of my lists makes the cut since otherwise I can't guarantee I've seen it.
