Was it really that great? I know it was IMPORTANT, but it's pretty overrated in my opinion. Todd Kinchen had a better effort.

It was god-like

Given the circumstances of the game (#1 vs #3), and the fact that he broke about 7 or 8 tackles, yes, it was that great.

But LSU was not # 1 and playing the # 3 ranked team at the time either.
Cannon broke tackles.
From what I remember Kinchen broke 1 tackle then just outran everyone

Sorry you can't understand something that is in black & white and not digitally remastered or in HD......

Did Kinchen play offense, defense and special teams? Cannon intercepted a pass earlier in the game. I have to think he was a little more tired than Kinchen was when Kinchen scored on his return.
Cannon was LSU's punter for most of the season (44 punts, 40.3 avg.), was the main kick returner (eight kickoffs, 23.8 avg., and 15 punts, 14.7 avg.).. He was a huge force on defense, with four interceptions he returned 145 yards (47.6 per interception). One of them came in the Ole Miss game.
You have to wonder, by late October, what kind of toll that workload would have taken on Kinchen, and by the fourth quarter of the game, what those multiple roles (offense, defense, punts and all returns) would have done to take a little something away from Kinchen's legs.
Different eras, different contexts. It's pretty hard for the ESPN generation to get that sometimes.
I'd say they're both spectacular returns, but they cannot be evaluated without fully understanding the context (of which I merely scratched the surface).

It's all my father can talk about sometimes.
Too bad that blocked kick against Bamma last year wasn't run back for a TD. that would have beaten Billy Cannon's run.

So was Cannon's run great because of the run itself or because of the impact of the run? If it was the former, then there probably have been more impressive individual plays. If the latter, then you could call Cie Grant's hit on Dorsey in the second overtime of the fiesta bowl a better play since it resulted in Ohio State winning the national championship.

different era back then. We had the one championship year but other than that, we kinda sucked. Plays like that weren't common for us like they are today.

Regarding Cannon's run that may be the dumbest thing ever posted. Sad alleged LSU fans have so little understanding of its football history.

bba u must be very young. I was a season ticket holder during that run. I was in the south end zone & it was unreal. ol' piss came back & lsu made goal a goal line stand to win the game. Cannon was an all American on both sides of the ball.

Yea, the guy who went on to win the Heisman in a game where LSU was #1 vs #3 team is really overrated.
