100K in TS?

As many know almost every home game there is a "bald spot" in part of the student section (SS). It often goes unused because most of the students concentrate near the NW corner of the student section.
Now here's what's interesting about this. When I was student in the early-mid 80's, TS's official capacity was something like 77K. For the '83 UW game, we packed 83K+ in TS. Mostly due to unlimited seating in the SS, i.e., students only had to show their student ID and you were in.
After the UW game, the fire marshal required LSU to implement some attendance control measures so that the # of students allowed in the SS corresponded to the actual # of seats available in the SS. Basically, the same policy as is in place to this day.
But really what’s happened is the density of people in a part of the SS is every bit as dense as it was in ’83. So the problem hasn’t really been resolved it’s just not as large in scale as it used to be.
Questions:
1) Does anyone know what the Fire Marshal’s governing principle/concern is for this?
2) Is there any reason some sort of mitigation couldn’t be implemented. Something along the lines of having students attend an emergency evacuation class. This kind of thing is done in other arenas all the time.
We had 93K for the UF game. I think we could go over 100K if something like suggested above was put in place and the SS was “re-opened.”

I don't think that there was a bald spot in the SS for the fla game...

that empty section is for the med students. they never show up unless its UF/bama. once the game starts the student section in that area spreads out and it looks full.

That's what they get for selling tickets to students on LSU campuses that aren't in Baton Rouge.
I can't blame them, getting doctors hooked on LSU football is definitely a good idea.

well it looks like shite to have the empty block up there when you have students in Baton rouge that can't get tickets

Wait a min, with this decade came the "freshman 15" thing so we may actually have less people since you guys may take up more space now!

Theres no way that they don't print more tickets for students than there are seats. For UF, they had people EVERYWHERE to where you almost couldn't move.
eta: There's no way it's possible to seat 100k in TS.

My whole premise is that the SS could allow 7-10K more in, all the while addressing the Fire Marshal's concern (whatever it really is), and TS could hold 100K.
I don't care where they come from as long as they're there and they're LOUD.

You're talking about adding 7k more people into a section that only holds what? 12k?

If you're keying on the word "seat" you're probably correct. If you think in terms of "hold" it would be close. Recall we were 7K over capacity against UW in '83. 7K over 92,600 is knocking on the 100K door.

You honestly asked that question to this group?? JK
Happen to be in school 83-88 and remember exactly what you are talking about. That is when we first started having to pay extra $5/game for "reserved seats" and the "slot system" was installed by academic level.
I happen to know a little about the fire marshal requirements and it is simple as this - it is all about exits and exit capacity. NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code) is the governing document. You are not going to get special "exemptions" around occupancy requriements with the State. I have no doubt that we exceed the capacity requriements at any given big game because the number of people that "sneek" into the game without being accounted for are probably on the order of a thousand.

Tennessee added 7,000 "seats" by repainting seat markers in the 90's.
The only way you could stand in there was on the seat and the ground, or sideways.

Thanks
Really appreciate the insight on the FM's code. But again, if someone is only looking it in SS macro terms, the concern hasn't gone away. The exits used by those concentrated in the NW corner won't be the same ones used by the "bald spot".
Same concern just slightly smaller in scope.

Totally understand your point and it is a good one. Trust me on this one, LSU is in the business to make money on Football since it is carrying the financial burden for most other sports. If there is a way to sell more seats and squeeze more people in there based on the size (based on the total square footage of TS)and seating arrangements, they are working on it as I believe they are.
So as one commenter posted, perhaps Tenn did have the additional square footage and enough exits to redraw seats. I am sure the administration is doing that as well. To your point, are we meeting the exit capacity requriements for that part of the stadium if students are jammed in there? What if there was an emergency, could all of them get out? Would there be trampling? Lets leave out the fact that most are well on their way to intoxication by that point in the day!

Regarding the bald spot in SS, yes it is for non-BR campuses, like New Orleans and Shreveport med school students.
But, we don't have to sit in that section (it is only reserved for us). We could basically sit anywhere in the SS we wanted. Given the opportunity to sit closer to the field with your other friends, where would you rather sit?

thats not the med school section, they sit on the opposite side of the student section from that. the empty section is simply because people crowd the lower sections because they think they are better seats and leave the upper student section area open since it is all general seating. that being said I think there was a little more than 94000 at the UF game this year, I don't think there is room for 6000 extra people in the area that is usually left empty
The section that is usually empty is 237 and 236, the med school/ Law school section is 223

yes. We need more empty seats at all costs.

Not talking about adding seats but allowing more students in the student section.

When did the band move further into the N endzone...we used to be closer to the 50!
