You mean Lee can't excel in the 2nd team and make his case for the 1st team? Why can Jarrett Lee (the savior) not do that???

Its obvious the team last year lost faith in itself and its QB as well, Jarrett needs to win the teams trust too, which he hasn't done so far this season.

Well I guess since you just threw Jefferson under bus saying he is not a leader, now you are saying Lee isn't a leader.

Guess since neither QB is a leader LSU is just screwed.

Didn't say that. JJ needs to improve for sure, but he is still a better bet than Lee at this point.

Did you not read what you wrote?
quote:

We stick with JJ

Build his confidence and let him develop, for whatever reasons it didn't work with JL last year. If JL has improved, he needs to prove in practice and beat out JJ, simple as that.

Also, the coach and team need to trust him to lead. Hasn't happened so far and I don't see it happening this year

You said, he is not leading, that you don't see it even happening this year.

Referring to Jarrett Lee.

I think y'all are talking past each other on this issue. There is no reason that Miles couldn't put Lee into a series or two during the game to mix things up. I doubt that Jefferson is so fragile that this would shatter his confidence.

Here are the arguments for adding Lee to the rotation:
* Gives LSU the "deep threat".
* Allows Jefferson to take a break from the game and watch the defensive looks from the outside.
* By sticking it out last year during a tough freshman year, Lee deserves a chance to show that he has grown in the position.
* By enduring last year and shouldering the responsibility for his mistakes, he has shown that he has moxie and some of the leadership qualities that you need in your QB.

And here's a new one. Is it really fair to set the bar so high for a freshman or sophomore QB for their first year as starting QB, and then not allow him a chance to show that he has developed and improved the following year? By this standard, if Russell Shepherd shows any promise this year, then Jordan Jefferson can forget about being the starting QB next year. And then the cycle starts all over again...

A lot of interesting comments.

The back and forth, I think, shows the difficulty of responding to all 206 comments, but I finally responded to every e-mail I received on this topic. That's why I put my e-mail address at the end of each piece and encourage people to contact me. My time between columns and stories fills up pretty quickly with other freelance assignments, research and other matters, so I can't always check out threads, but I do eventually respond to all e-mails.

Thanks, Axl. I borrowed "squirrel" from the famous "Buddy D" down in New Orleans - he'd always call fans that didn't know what they were talking about "squirrels"...

There is maybe no reason that you or I know of, but that doesn't mean Coach Miles doesn't have a reason.

With his track record of success here, I'll let Coach do the coaching.

Your column basically reads as 'try something why not Lee'. I'll tell you why, because Lee missed wide open recievers, because Lee threw interceptions and because doesn't have the confidence to lead an LSU offense. All of this was proven last year. Can Lee improve? Sure he can, but had he improved maybe just maybe he would've beat out JJ in practice. Did he? NO.
So that's that my friend, when it comes to pure speculation I can argue that Lafell might have improved as a QB in his 4 years at LSU, but do I have something to back that statement? No, but I know he didn't throw pick-6's and bring the morale of the team down last year. Does that mean I think Lafell should be QB, no.
There. Enjoy, thats the nature of speculation, anybody (including me) can blast your argument to the moon.

A bad freshman year doesn't necessarily mean a bad sophmore season. JJ isn't playing that hot at the moment. Trying JL doesn't seem very outlandish at all. I'm not saying start him, but letting him actually see the field for a series or two may be a good idea.

Did you notice that Miles didn't seem receptive to this idea at all? I'll take the coaches word on this, I agree we need a spark and that can/should be RS running and throwing the ball.

Lee isn't a bad option if JJ goes down, he needs to work on a few things.

Obviously the coaches disagree, since he didn't see the field either. That was probably my biggest disappointment in the coaching last game. RS is a tremendous player and would certainly be a weapon. He should be touching the ball several times per game no matter who is under center.

Maybe that's all Miles thinks they need. It's worked for many championship teams: Play strong defense, have a solid kicking game, and don't beat yourself on offense.

This team has too many weapons to have to settle for that. The Tigers can open things up with Lee if they take a chance and line up in formations suited for him and for their skill set.

Why not? Am I crazy for asking the question?

No more crazy than the Mad Hatter, the coach I enjoyed watching every time he said, "Let's go for it." The coach who didn't coach scared.

Seeing Jarrett Lee and THAT Les Miles make a comeback at the same time? What a ride that would be.

Hey, I'm a patient man. It took slightly less than a year, but it happened. Lee and Lesticles on the same night, for the win. That's all I was really trying to say in that mountain of words last year.

Hope y'all are doing well. You have the most entertaining weekly drama in televised college football. Enjoy!
