I am in the seasonal mood. I just read "The Raven" by Poe, "The Body Snatchers" by R.L. Stevenson, and about to begin "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde." I need a good novel, though. I have never been the one for reading a long horror story, though, and am not well versed in the genre. Can somebody give me a few good recommendations?

Oh, and please do not recommend Stoker's "Dracula" or Shelly's "Frankenstien." I have read them both a couple times. I don't think, however, that I could read them again, not right now.

Amityville Horror

Supposedly true. Guy that was a dorm parent for me in high school from Jersey would always talk about the house and how people he knew had been in it and felt "something"

Do you like Stephen King.

I would start with some of his earlier works like Salem's Lot, The Shining or The Dead Zone. For years people have told me Cujo is one of his best books, but I just can't get into it after seeing the movie.

Christine by King was also outstanding.

Cujo was a MUCH better book than it was a movie. The Shining is a better option if you're new to Stephen King though, IMO

Problem is the original poster has probably seen or knows about most of the movies from King's books.

I used to read John Saul and Dean Koontz but haven't read any of their books in years.

Actually haven't read any horror in years so I am not sure who the currents Kings and Queens of horror are at this time.

True.

I just read a piece from Straub's Ghost Story. I am thinking about that one.

Actually Straub and King's The Talisman is very good but it is more of a horro/fantasy hybrid.

Never read Ghost Story but the movie was good.

I just picked up two books from Barnes and Noble

1. Peter Straub's Ghost Story

2. Clive Barker's Mister B. Gone

The second one seems like a possible fun read. The book is haunted! Yes, by a demon! The demon tries to convince his reader to quit reading. But once the demon realizes that the reader isn't stopping, he tells his ancient memior of the history of good vs. evil...interesting. I hope it is good.

Sounds interesting. I have only read one Barker book and that was so long ago, I have no memory of the book. Perhaps the demon erased my memory once I finished the book.

That craft bastard...this book was in the bargain Halloween section. The demon marked the book down, so it would be more appealing....

I just started "Ghost Road Blues" by Maberry. It's the first in a trilogy.

From amazon...

Ghost Road Blues

Only 150 pages in, but it's good so far.

Also, try Richard Matheson or Shirley Jackson if you haven't read them yet.

"House of Leaves" by Danielewski is really creepy and unsettling, but it takes a little work. The format is bizarre and takes some getting used to, but if you can deal with it you will be rewarded.

"World War Z" by Brooks is a lot of fun if you are into zombie stuff.

Mister B. Gone was great, but it was definitely more comedy than horror in my opinion. And speaking of that, I was posting in this thread to suggest that to you or anything by Clive Barker, he's the best horror writer right now.
