I've always looked into this field of work. I'm starting this next week and was wondering if anyone in the field can give me some advice.

Those of you who work in it, I'll trust you because either you work in insurance or you don't. There is no half arse insurance salesman out there.

I'll be selling mostly to a senior market, LTC, medicare supplement, etc...

Thanks

Be extremely knowledgeable and know the pro's/con's of each vehicle you recommend, therefore, explaining it to the client in a way they can comprehend and put all possible options on the table

This is going to take some time, but I understand exactly what you are saying.

Thanks

Thanks Sheek.

Yes and no. We have a list of over 65 to call so it's cold calling, but it's cold calling narrowed down to a specific class.

We do have a list of mail outs that comes in for people that are interested. You have to put in some time to get these though which I understand.

unlike cold calling, they are at least warm leads with a interest in the products. Work hard, educate yourself on the products, and network network network. if you work from 3 channels you will tear it up and make more money than you will ever make and work yourself out of a job. I use to do public accounting now work for a client had some ins agencies clients and those guys were bankin.

Good luck. This is a very difficult field to get into due to the complexities and challenges regarding insurability.

Also, establishing a need for LTC, for example, is not easy. Most people think they don't need it. And, by the time they realize they do, it's too late (either uninsurable or too expensive).

Don't get me wrong. Insurance is a great industry. But, you will definitely be challenged with the route you are taking. Cold calling a list of people that haven't expressed direct interest is going to be very hard. Another thing, a good majority of older folks hate "telemarketing".

I figure I would toss my two cents in and give you a few negatives. I will end on a positive note though.

It is a very rewarding field, not only because of the potential to make a good living, but to also really help people by taking care of their needs. When you get that phone call from their kids thanking you for selling their parents that LTC policy, you will realize why you do what you do. Good luck!

I have had my arse kicked quite a few times already but still on my feet.

For example,

I went out to this ladies house, met with her sold her a medicare supplement policy and left.

The very next morning the police department calls our office wanting to know if I was at the office yet. The secretary hands me the phone and the officer asked me some questions if I had seen anyone suspicious in the area the previous morning and he was wanting to know how long I had been at the office currently.

Well long story short the lady I wrote the Med Supplement for, her daughter-n-law who lives behind her was raped the very next morning.
The daughter-n-law describes the guy as a bigger guy about six foot tall.

So the officer interview's my customer and asked her who has been in the area lately that she didn't know and she gives them my business card. The officer asked her what I look like and she tells them a bigger guy about 6 feet tall.

I round up my height to say I'm 5'9"

I relooked at her application and she is 5'2" so to her I probably looked 6 feet tall.

Anyway the officer called me back asked me a few more questions and said don't worry about anything that I wouldn't here from him again so apparently they got the guy.

No one warned about this kind of shite.

I am in the same market you are in which is to say I work with seniors. I wrk for Mutual of Omaha and love it. Med Supps are great and as another poster eluded to LTCi is a bitch getting thru underwrting. Nice job sticking it out a year. Your renewals should be accumulating nicely. Best of Luck for the future.
