Do you consider non-commitable offers, actual offers?

cash made a good point earlier today on the board when he said he didn't consider them offers
i tend to agree now that i think bout it
it's a offer to offer, subject to certain events in the future unfolding

The term non-committable offer is stupid. I agree that if the kid can't commit he doesn't have an offer. I'm sure there are player with contingent offers like you mentioned, but they should know which one they have and what it would take for the staff to accept their commitment.
I think every year there are players that only hear the offer part and not the rest and something goes wrong when they try to commit.

but it's not really an offer
some people are like...oh we offered him? is it commitable?
that 2nd question shouldn't exist in the discussion to me (and i assume cash). you have an offer, or you don't

Not an offer until you're able to actually commit.

If Les gives an offer letter to a recruit, then the recruit has an offer. If Les has given three offer letters to running backs and Les has determined he is only taking two running backs, the first two backs that commit get the slots and the third back is SOL. There is NO such thing as a non-commitable offer. Either the recruit has a letter from Les or he doesn't. Non-commitable offers are something the fans have made up.

I have been following recruiting since the 80s and I had never heard the term "commitable offer" until last year.

i could be wrong, but the concept is unique to our fanbase

I think it's bad terminology. With some exceptions, I would say most offers have strings attached.
If a school has offers out to 5 QB's, obviously if they all tried to commit at the same time, some would then not have "commitable offers."

Lets say we want 3 RBs in our '11 class.
Our coaches board looks like this in terms of priority:
1)Hilliard- offer is open till NSD
2) Hill- offer is open till NDS
3) Random kid from MS
4) Random kid from Florida
We want 3 RBs. We mail 4 offers, which is not many if you want 3 RBs. Hilliard and Hill wait till NSD to commit/sign, but inform coaches they are locks. That leaves one spot. Both have offers but only 1 will be taken. Thus, after one commits, the other will have an offer that is "non commitable"

According to Scout, LSU has offered:
4 QBs (not including Scroggins), 7 RBs, 2 FBs, 21 Receivers, 7 TEs, 9 OTs, 2 Guards, 2 Centers, 13 DTs, 15 DEs, 15 OLBs, 4 MLBs, 11 Safeties, 9 CBs, 1 Kicker, and 2 Punters. That's 124 players. Of course not all of these guys have LSU as their top choice, but I guarantee that if the number 18 and 19 receivers want to commit to LSU early in the process, while they are still waiting on their top 5 guys, they will be slowplayed.
Garrett Uekman and Lache Seatrunk are not given the same kind of offer. I don't see how anyone can argue this.

Its not hard to understand, and it happens at every school.
Just think of how many non commitable offers were floating around when ED O was at Ole Miss. They would offer like 200 kids.

It happens everywhere. Just with different terminology.

I would venture to say LSU puts out 80 - 100 written offers per year. Les holds a spot open for Seastrunk until he says yes or commits to another school. Texas, for instance, is holding three scollys in hopes of landing Jeffcoat, Seastrunk, etc.

I think the term "contingent offer" is probably more appropriate than non-committable offer.

i seriously doubt LSU puts out 80-100 legit offers
Tennessee? Ole Miss under Ed O? ok
50 sounds more correct to me
a team like Texas prolly sends out about 30, but they're in a somewhat unique position

If you just go to the Scout site, you can see which players LSU has offered. Now I'm not sure how Scout determines if someone has an offer, but there are 124 guys with an LSU offer listed by their name.

pretty sure the players tell scout they have an offer and that's how it gets listed
i'm sure most of those guys have gotten a letter from LSU or have been contacted by somebody from LSU and that's an "offer"
i mean shite, just look at a high-profile guy like storm johnson. he never had a real offer
