Drew Brees was a dumb pickup for Saints?

In '06 when NO picked up Drew Brees I could not believe it. I said to myself, "Wow, more stupid management from a franchise that can't seem to get decent management."
Why would we pick up some broke dick(Brees was coming off an injury) QB that has been just OK in his 5 or 6 years in the league when we would have our choice between Young, Leinart, and Cutler in the draft? Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Well, never have I ever been so happy to be so so wrong. The purpose of this thread is, did anybody else feel this way then? Just curious.

he was one season removed from a pro bowl, i was pretty excited when we got him but never thought he'd be this good

No, when the Saints picked up Brees I bought season tickets.

It was more mixed emotions because I liked Brees from his days at Purdue and always thought he could be a very good quaterback but did not think he was gonna be back 100% after the injury.

After Brooks, I would have been happy with a 3-legged dog as quarterback.

this
although, honestly, I was in college and didn't spend as much time paying attention to football as I do now, so my opinions then weren't as strong as they are now.

No, because he was coming off a pro bowl year and both James Andrews and Roch Hontas said that his shoulder would be fine.

I was cautiously optomistic. With as bad as we had been at the position and the turmoil that the franchise was still going through, I was just glad that somebody would even come here. The injury did have me a little worried though.

That day, my brother and I proclaimed him automatically the best QB the saints had in our lifetime. We sat there, drank beer, and counted back all of the QBs and laughed.

I thought it was a very risky move by the Saints. Pennington had the same surgery the season before and he just didn't seem to be the same. When the contract numbers were released and I found out that we committed $60 mill to Brees, I said a prayer. Turns out, we got a bargain.

quote:You do realize the other choices were finding a quarterback in the 2006 Draft (first round quarterbacks were Vince Young and Jay Cutler) or Daunte Culpepper in free agency, right? So, given those opportunities I would would say Drew Brees was the logical choice then, and he's turned out to be the best quarterback in the league so far this year and last.

Bama fans should be thrilled the Saints got Brees. Had Saban not listened to the Docs and went ahead and got Brees, ya'll might still have Shula as a head coach.

I agree. My vote was for Air Bud though.

I agree that I didn't trust Brees' arm after the injury. But I didn't want to draft a QB, I wanted Culpepper.
It really is great to be wrong sometimes.

+1 Good thing I don't make those type of decisions

You really wanted us to draft a QB?
The reason I loved the Brees signing so much was only partially because of Brees himself.
Mostly I was psyched because that essentially "saved" our #2 overall pick to spend on Mario or Reggie or Brick. It was like getting a free #2 pick since we didn't have to waste it on some 50/50 quarterback who may or may not pan out.

I got a semi when we signed him.

in San Diego he showed some flashes of talent but the offense was designed around LT more than around Brees. In N'awlins the offense is built around Brees resulting in many throws down the field.

Yeah. Cutler, Leinart, and Young didn't look like bad picks. In retrospect I understand now how wrong I was.

Well, Reggie hasn't exactly panned out either.

I knew it was a great move the minute Saban passed on him.
