I'm watching the Thursday night game, and the scroll on the bottom of the screen says "LSU vs. UL Laf"...

I bet they are gonna call ESPN and demand that they shorten that abbreviation. Am I the first to say that ESPN hates the Ragin Cajuns?

You've obviously never been through Lafayette and noticed all of the University of Louisiana signs. They always forget to add that Lafayette. Please search the stadium Saturday and tell me anywhere you see the words Lafayette on any Ragin Cajun gear.

Really, get a life. Why do some people keep this stuff going. I saw a post earlier that said, they should have changed their name to the University of Acadiana (Which i wouldn't have been against).... and of course, someone had to say, you forgot @ Lafayette. I am guilty of coming on TD and trying to prove my point, but some of you guys are letting this get to you. Who cares if we are UL, ULL, Ulala, Louisiana, USL, SLI, SLII, Acadiana, the Ragin' Cajuns, The Bulldogs... No matter what UL does, someone will bitch about it, to try and keep us in "Our Place". Ya'll are LSU supporters! After this week I will wish the best for LSU. But some of you need to grow up... jmo!

I doubt ESPN has even heard of ULL. LSU probably provided them with the info to let them know that they were having a scrimmage against a mid level highschool team in Tiger Stadium Sat. Night.

Man, come on. And some of you wonder why some UL fans really hate LSU. But this is game week, so trash talk is here!

I don't gripe about anything that ULL does other than the UL thing. I haven't gotten an answer, but what does ULM do when ULL travels up there. Do they put "Louisiana" on the scoreboard or do they put ULL. Why should the Sun Belt conference bow to the Cajun demands when ULM could demand the same thing?

The University of Louisiana at Monroe tried for years to be branded as "Louisiana". The University of Louisiana at Lafayette has tried for years to be "Louisiana". A few years ago, Louisiana-Monroe decided to go with ULM Warhawks as their Trademark name. Louisiana-Lafayette decided not to go with ULL as their trademark name. Regardless, I believe one of us needs to hold the "Louisiana" name. But, if ULM would have kept pushing for it, and we wouldn't have, LSU would be bitching about ULM. Anything to down another in state University, LSU will do it.

"Please refer to us as Louisiana in press releases and on the scoreboard." Somebody must have sent word to Kansas St because even their schedule said that they were playing Louisiana.

Sounds a little like revisionist history there. Back in the days before the University of Louisiana System was created in its present form, USL made a unilateral effort to change its name to the University of Louisiana. The legislature intervened and passed a statute that prohibited any public university in the state from changing its name without legislative sanction, nullifying the name change. Subsequently, the legislature permitted any school in the newly renamed University of Louisiana System to adopt the name "University of Louisiana at (city)," if at least 2 schools elected to do so. Only ULL and ULM adopted this approach. As far as I recall, ULM never promoted itself at "the University of Louisiana without the "Monroe," after it adopted the name University of Louisiana at Monroe. Frankly it has only been ULL that has pushed the issue, and its efforts predate the adoption of the names ULM and ULL by the respective institutions. (see
LINK

ULM didn't adopt the Warhawk name until the NCAA forced most schools with Indian derived mascots to change their mascots, an event that occurred well after the ULL and ULM names were adopted in 1999. ULL made the effort to use the UL name from the beginning of the change from USL to ULL.

There is no compelling reason that any school in the UL System should bear the designation "Louisiana" as its primary reference. Indeed that effort flies in the face of the rules and intent of the legislature. The intent was that no campus in the system would be known as "Louisiana."

Almost every other instance (if not all cases) of the use of University of (state) derives from a single university campus that may later have evolved into multiple campuses, but with the original campus generally being known as the University of (state), with the younger campuses being designated by the cities where those campuses are located, as in the University of Texas (being the Austin campus) and the other campuses being known as UT Dallas, etc. But since that is not the history (none of the UL system campuses are satellite campuses of any of the others, though several were originally part of the LSU system), ULL has no claim of precedence either in mission or history (La. Tech is older [1894] than ULL [1900] for example) to any of the other schools in the system. Nevertheless there seems to be a concerted effort by some associated with ULL to skirt the intent of the legislature and the equality of status of each of the UL system constituent schools and promote the ULL as "Louisiana."
