Released...

Halo 3 ODST: The Storyline
The year is 2552. Covenant forces control the city of New Mombasa. They are searching for something beneath its darkened streets. You are an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper. Your orders: Stay alive, meet up with your scattered squad, and escape the embattled city.

Halo 3: ODST allows players to explore dangerous new ground, search the dark, abandoned streets of New Mombasa for clues, and fight back against the Covenant invasion from multiple perspectives. Dropping in as "the rookie," a new member of an elite squad of Orbital Drop Shock Troopers sent into New Mombasa on a classified recon mission, you'll be armed with specialized weaponry and upgraded technology, including silenced weapons and a VISR enhanced vision mode.

Separated from your squad, you'll have to scour the city for clues in order to learn what happened to Buck, Dare, Dutch, Mickey, and Romeo. As you collect new clues, you’ll experience the story from their perspectives, fighting through the occupied city hours earlier.

Release Date:
Xbox: September 22, 2009
PC: Eventually

Official Game Site

Gameplay

ODST's gameplay is tweaked in several small but significant ways from Halo 3. In general, ODSTs will have to be much more careful in combat relative to Spartans.

Reduced Capabilities | ODST's cannot use equipment or dual wield, do not have a motion tracker, move slightly slower, have a shorter jump and take fall damage.
Health System | Similar to Halo 1's health system, ODST's have a small amount of Stamina, which recharges, and a larger amount of health beneath that, which does not. Accessing health packs and OPTICAN stations will recharge health.
New Capabilities | ODST's are equipped with a night vision "VISR" mode, which in addition to amplifying visibility highlights enemies and allies. They carry three of each grenade type rather than two, and have access to an overhead map of New Mombasa, with the ability to place way points and track objectives, and a data recorder log.

New Features to ODST:
Firefight. Firefight is Halo's version of a survival mode, wherein players take on increasingly difficult waves of varied enemies and see how long they can last.

Visual Intelligence System, Reconnaissance (or VISR), which includes a new low-light vision mode which identifies allies and enemies through the HUD on his helmet's visor by illuminating and classifying objects; green outline for allies, red outline for enemies, and yellow outline for important objects. The VISR can also be used to manage waypoints, mission objectives, and information which will help the player.

New Weapons
M7 SUBMACHINE GUN - Now silenced and scoped, this variant has a much longer range than it's Halo 2 and Halo 3 versions.

M6C/SOCOM - A cross between the Halo 1 and Halo 3 pistols. Your go-to headshot machine.

New Maps
Citadel, Heretic, Longshore.

Characters:
The game's protagonist, the Rookie, is an unnamed member of a special military unit, the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers, known as ODSTs or "Helljumpers". ODSTs often deploy in small, one-man Human Entry Vehicles (HEVs), launched from spaceships in the upper atmosphere. During the game, the Rookie is separated from his five teammates and must find out what happened to them with the guidance of a city maintenance AI known as the Superintendent. The Rookie's teammates are Buck, Dutch, Romeo, Mickey, and Dare, a UNSC Office of Naval Intelligence agent in charge of the squad's operation.

Multiplayer:
In lieu of a complete ODST multiplayer option, the game ships with Halo 3's multiplayer contained on a separate disc. The 24 maps consist of the original eleven Halo 3 maps (Construct, Epitaph, Guardian, High Ground, Isolation, Last Resort, Narrows, Sandtrap, Snowbound, The Pit, Valhalla), the Heroic map pack (Foundry, Rat's Nest, Standoff), the Legendary map pack (Avalanche, Blackout, Ghost Town), the "Cold Storage" map, and the Mythic map pack (Assembly, Orbital, and Sandbox) as well as three new maps (Citadel, Heretic, Longshore).

I've thought about it solely to get into the Beta for Halo:Reach although the story is growing on me with those new live action commercials.

Agreed.

If I didn't mention it above all those who buy Halo 3:ODST will be apart of the BETA testing for the New Halo: Reach.

I'm looking forward to firefight....

yes, from what i've read the story line will be better than expected.

essentially, you the rookie is instantly seperated from your brigade, if you will, and you must search throughout the campaign for clues to as of how and why this happened.

You will be given the opportunity, when the clues are in place, to go back in time and play as other members of the brigade to fill in the missing pieces of the puzzle as to what happened.

I've also read that their are Classes/Specialization of ODST in the version.

i'm going to go ahead and guarantee i will be one bad motherfricking sniper.

If I do get it I sense there will be a little learning curve to get used to playing without shields and dying from high falls.

So if I sold my Halo 3 disk and I get ODST, I'll still be able to play all the Halo 3 maps and the new ones without having to re-buy Halo 3?

Your admission to never playing Halo 1 makes you unworthy to dis the pistol. The pistol in that game was pure awesomeness.

as i understand it yes. the new ODST will come with the Halo 3 maps and map packs.

with that said, i might do a little research before pulling the trigger.

I've played all of the Halo series, but didn't start until Halo 2's arrival.

VERY COOL!!

LINK

Check out the video.

I had no idea some of the firefly cast (Nathan Fillon, Adam Baldwin) were doing the voiceover.

How cool is that? I'm definitely getting this *(ahem for my son) * on tuesday when it comes out. Looks like a ton of fun.

I love the way you're in one place, that huge city..and just cruise around and try to survive.

I also like they brought back healthpacks.

Is it just me? Screw paying $65 (with tax) for a 6 hour campaign on legendary mode. I already have purchased all of the other d/l maps, so there is no value for me on that end, and in firefight, there is no matchmaking...you just have to hope that three of your other buds are on at the same time and have the open schedule to play it. Pass. I'll wait until it's $19.99 one day to experience the story...

you make a good point mike.

there's no doubt the fan is getting job'd for $60.

Bungie was originally going to drop the price for ODST due to lack there of campaign, but they went back and added more (still just 6 hours) and added Firefight.

You are right....The addition of Firefight and a few new features is not a great justification for the price going backup to $60.

Here's the positive though:
- There will be additional ODST maps
- The gamplay isn't as linear, if you will, which is new to the Halo franchise
- This will give users the ability to Beta Test Halo: Reach if/when it comes out.

realistically, this is just to keep the Halo crowd sufficed until they can put out Halo:Reach.

...but for me, it will keep me sane until MW2
