The same team that the Tigers are if Saban had never stepped foot in Baton Rouge.

I had a discussion with a friend of mine, and this subject came up.

I believe Miles has done a great job, especially with this years recruiting class.

I'm curious what others think... I'm new to this board, so sorry if this has already been covered.

You are likely to get hammered for this one. Answer to your question is "no", and it's an almost daily discussion on this board.

don't think we would be, saban was a good recruiter and set the tone for us winning, now miles is a good recruiter to but at the time of sabans hire he was more of a big name coach than miles.imo.

No but LSU was pretty darn serious about hiring the right coach and investing in the program to get results. They deserve credit for finding the right guy to do it. Twice.

Yeah, I don't mean to bring up anything that has been covered. I just want to know others opinions. I am a UL fan (I will get hammered for not adding another L), but I grew up pulling for the Tigers as well. I just want other opinions, discussing the situation with a WV alum/fan.

Meh. All I knew about him at the time was that he came from a moderately successful tenure at Michigan State and that Dinardo & Co. drubbed the ever-living frick out of them in a bowl game a few years previous.

I think LSU was ready to step up and get a big time coach so it's hard to say what would have happened. Saban stepped into the right situation at the right time and has been riding the wave ever since.

Keep in mind that LSU made Saban as much as Saban made LSU.

LSU at the time was a powder keg ready to blow...Saban was just the spark.

you can ask this about every team in the country using their best coach in school history and the answer to all of them is no. why would you even ask this. its ridiculous.

DollaChoppa, I agree. There is alot of arguments about this besides LSU fans. I know the answer is no... Outsiders do look at the anger towards saban by LSU fans as, simply, f'd up. That was the whole argument between us up north. Should LSU be thankful for saban. I say they are, just a little pissed that he went to another SEC rival. am I wrong?

LSU fans were VERY grateful for Saban, and for the most part didn't fault him for leaving (although some grumbled about how he left).

If he had gone up to coach Michigan or something, LSU fans wouldn't have minded. But to go to a major rival that we have to contend with yearly was like catching your wife cheating.

Jog my memory.

Who were the other coaches on the short list when Saban was hired after the '99 season?

how old are you? we had only won one nc before saban but we won our share of sec titles and bowl games. to say we were nothing before saban is completely wrong and seems to validate the bama 18 yr olds that say the same thing. saban and miles both have been very successful at LSU and lets hope that continues. maybe you should go to the atletic complex and look at some of the trophies.

Yea, we were pretty legit in the 50s and 60s.

and 1908...

but somehow according to other people we have no tradition. "8 years of tradition"

Hell, if I remember correctly LSU ranks in the top 15 in terms of all time programs (calculated by formula).

No, I'd of wasted all that time back in the late 60's and early 70's listening to the tigers play football on the AM radio, if Saban had never shown up...

It's a no brainer....
