Great player. Terrific first step, strong, fast, and plays until the whistle on every single play.
I am very excited about him. Reminds me of Al Jones when he played for St. Aug. Just relentless on every play.

So u went to his game against Rummel @FHS I take it? Can you tell us some of the things he did? Maybe how many tackles he had, sacks, etc?
Thanks
Thanks

Thanks for the report, TheBob.
Shouldn't be a surprise to all the recruit-tards. All you have to do is watch his film and see that he's a damn good player. I think it's unfair to expect him to be another Alem bc I don't ever see him getting that big.

He was just pretty much unblockable. Not sure what his stats were. He had quite a few tackles and one or two sacks. Put it this way.....I am very glad he will be attending LSU. Best I can describe.

I've seen a couple of his games and he really didn't "Wow" me but I did notice he went hard every play. Hopefully the kid pans out for us.

Good to hear Bob. I'm definitely going to make a point to see him this year.

I agree. The comparison I was trying to make was how they both play the game. When Alem was at St. Aug, he was 100mph on every single play. Seeing Bates tonight just reminded me of that. Just the effort that he plays the game with is unreal.

Check out their DT too. Supposedly only a junior this year. #99. Also a very good player for St. Paul.

I agree. Hopefully LSU turns him loose as a 3rd down rusher in the future. Even if he only gets up to 240-245 lbs, he can still do a lot of damage there.

Houston Bates = David Pollack of Georgia.

We could only hope he turns out to be that good of a college player.

And we really hope he doesn't imitate Pollack's NFL career.

All I personally care about is how he plays in the P&G. Id prefer players who have that relentless drive and determination, but maybe not as much skill, over guys who have all the skill in the world, but slack off at everything. You can teach skill, you cant teach work ethic and drive.
I went to FHS, so I might wander home one friday afternoon to go see the game vs SPS with my dad, Ill check him out and post what I see in his game.

As would be expected, Rummel double teamed him and/or ran away from his side most of the game.
These aren't official stats, but I saw 2 sacks - the 1st forcing a fumble and the 2nd after shaking off a double team that initially appeared to have put him out of the play. Additionally, he had at least 2 or 3 tackles for losses, and several other tackles/assists. He also leveled a few people on special teams. One running play really impressed me in the 2nd half. Bates pursued to the opposite sideline and then upfield about 6 or 8 yards to make the tackle.
SPS gave up two long punt returns for TDs (both to #1 of Rummel) and that was the difference in the game.

re: "I think it's unfair to expect him to be another Alem bc I don't ever see him getting that big."
Give or take about a half inch in height and Bates is already as big as Rahim Alem was as a Freshman. LSU's 2005 roster had Alem listed at 6'-3", 233#. For 2006 to 2009 he is listed at 252, 254, 254, and 263, respectively.
From what I can gather, Bates is between 6'-2" and 6'-3" and in the low to mid 230s. I'm sure Moffit can put a few pounds on him. T-Bob's listed at 285 and I think he was 255-260ish his Sr year.
