When I lived in DC, I ate it once a week or so...it may be my favorite ethnic cuisine.

Blue Nile is Houston was good...the place I had it in NYC was also good.

If you are ever in DC, remember to try it there...it is the largest Ethiopian population in the U.S.

The "Isn't that an oxymoron" comments are pretty old, just getting that out of the way early to spare this from becoming an OT thread.

THose are just form people who have never tried it...other than possibly Thai, I cannot think of a more unique and complex ethnic cuisine that is full of so many different flavors.

I knew some Djibouti folk at LSU, they couldn't recommend any place for me to eat. If there's a place in NOLA to try it, I'm game.

Grains, beans, chicken, things of that nature. Served with a spongy bread. Not bad.

ETA: not rice, but other grains.

in Ethiopia

Whats it like?

They eat a sourdough type bread called injera. It ranges in size, but usually served on a large platter. It's stacked like pancakes. Injera is spongy and greyish in color.

They'll then take different stewed type meats and put it on top of the injera. If they're fasting (and they take fasting serious, NO meat/fish whatsoever) they'll eat lentils.
The stewed type meat is called Wat. Duro Wat (my favorite) is made with chicken.

They'll also eat kitfo which is raw beef and spices.

Tibs is a dry method to cook meat. I dont like it too much. It's too dry with the injera.

They'll eat injera and wot at least twice a day.

Ethiopian food is also pretty effing hot. They like it spicy.

Tej is a mead like alcoholic drink made from honey. They love it. I'm really not a fan. It gave me a massive headache.

Coffee is HUGE over there. If you're ever invited to an Ethiopian coffee ceremony you must go. It's amazing, and it's the best coffee you'll ever have.

huge population.

Denver and Detroit have large Ethiopian populations as well. I guess they like cities with D names.

Never heard of it.

Only African food I've really eaten is the stuff that was made popular in the Caribbean during colonial times.

No options in NO, Katrina took care of that. I would love if one was in BR. I try to eat it everytime im in houston or Dallas. those are the closest places to get it. I even tried to get them to ship me some injera, but to no avail. Although the last restuarnt i went to in houston said they'd be willing to open one here if I could show enough people would support it being as there isnt a large ethiopian pop here

i've heard there are two, but Blue Nile is the only one I've ever been able to find.

It's next to a Colombian restaurant that I've been meaning to try.
