We won two national titles with unproven quarterbacks.
One of them was already 5-1 as a starter, and the other was a 5th year SR; Bama is choosing between a RS Freshman and a JR with zero starts, who between the two of them total 16 pass attempts at the college level. How'd we do the last time we had that kind of experience at QB?

I could see Bama inside top 5 and LSU just outside top 10 at end of year. LSU has a harder schedule than Bama thus giving Bama a larger advantage.
So you would bet on Bama finishing ranked ahead of LSU. Would you bet on Bama beating LSU?

Yet I (and I am assuming you) do not follow those teams close enough to know each detail about the program. What if there was a minor change on coaching staff we do not know about, what if the back up is out for season.
If that is the case, it seems that you are filling in the blanks for other teams with optimistic presumptions (like Bama's QBs with 16 pass attempts between them managing key plays vs. SEC defenses, and them coming up with 3 top flight SEC-caliber offensive linemen when 8 months ago they couldn't come up with one and a quality backup). From what I can tell, if you fill in the questionmarks for LSU with speculation as optimistic as that used to fill in the question marks for other teams, we come out very close to the Tide. They were better last year, but they also have more (and more significant) holes to fill. Remember, with their intact OL, 5th year veteran QB and great defense, and with our struggling freshman QB and keystone kops defense, we still took them to OT last year. So it's not like there's some huge gulf in talent or ability, or even the teams in general. And, unlike Bama, we have hugely upgraded our coaching staff over last years.

I'm not usually the type to get all worried about whether I'm being "a homer" or whether my predictions are "realistic (i.e.; negative) enough". But even when I try and get pessimistic about this I just can't see much reason to believe Bama will be any better than LSU this year.

Alabama has a much softer schedule than LSU.
That's one very good reason to rank Bama higher than LSU.

Bama . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . LSU

USC being up there that high is the one that cracks me up. They don't even have a QB yet.

Aaron Corp.

I think others like you posted the same thing at this time last year.

I like it. Gives us a chance to prove we are a top 5 team without the pressure of living up to the hype. Remember our 2003 season we started out 12th (I think).

I think it is about right. I honestly was thinking more in the teens, but I guess being 1 year removed from a NC doesn't hurt. KC.

Actually, thats fricking stupid. Teams should be based on how good you think they really are, not how shitty their schedule is. Well, deep down inside we think LSU is better than Bama, but we think Bama's schedule is a little easier, so we'll rank Bama higher. Thats just fricking stupid.

Considering schedule will dictate how good they look? You don't think North Texas was put on schedule just to inflate our record?

Yes honestly I would if the game was held today

BTW: Joey, if you had read the conversation between Diginian and myself, you will see where I did not want to give a Top 10 because I do not know everythign about each team. He asked for one so I did end up providing one.
You are also putting too much stock into LSU going to OT with Bama. Just because we took them to OT does not give us an advantage this upcoming season.

Always better to start off lower than your potential than to start high and have no where to go but down.

Yes, but you had already previously stated that LSU at #11 was good and Bama at #5 was good.

That is true, and I never suggested it gave us an advantage. What I suggested gave us an advantage is that the two teams that were fairly closely matched (as evidenced by us going to OT) had both undergone changes, and that their changes included more significant losses and less apparent upgrades than ours did. We significantly upgraded the experience and qualifications of our defensive coaching staff, return our starting QBs with more experience than they had last year, and return most of our offensive line. None of that is true of Alabama.

As I stated earlier, Bama returns almost their entire #3 defense, they have a 4th Year Junior taking over at QB, and offensive line is really only issue.

The QB debate to me is a wash, QB with 2 starts or a QB that has been in system for 4 years and seen field in limited duty.

LSU also needs to fix special teams which so many fans tend to over look and I am not sure why.

Just to say we hired Chavis, Jefferson is starting so we are better is absurd to me at least. LSU does not know how the offensive line will play, how the defense will play, and like I said LSU is easier to evaluate because I am closer to team.
I do not think LSU magically repaired everything and there will be growing pains.

As for the first thing, if you read I stated my reasons also. I said that I believe early polls are an indication of where pollsters believe teams will finish. That Bama having an easier schedule should finish higher.
