The sale of alcohol in Tiger Stadium

All along, I've thought and been told its an SEC rule that alcohol can't be sold in Tiger Stadium. This issue has been beaten to death on these boards. ULL will start allowing the sale of it in their stadium this fall. But read the comments from Herb Vincent in this article, makes it sound like its not an SEC rule, but up to each school. Interesting.

Alcohol is also not allowed in the general seats at Tiger Stadium, but if you sit right above those areas, in the box seats, you can drink alcohol. "It's easier to control," said LSU Associate Vice Chancellor Herb Vincent. "It's a game management issue." Vincent says because none of the other schools in the Southeastern Conference allow alcohol in general seating, LSU does not feel pressured to change their policy. "It's kind of an unsaid decision that's been made among the league schools that we're not going to sell alcohol," Vincent said. Vincent says if SEC schools start to sell it though, LSU may reconsider. There is no SEC or NCAA policy in place banning alcohol sales at college sports. It's left up to each individual campus to decide.

to paraphrase:
"it's for the general publics well being that we don't feed them beer DURING the game"

some guy got stabbed by a drunk in tiger stadium back in the 80's.
I think that is what officially sealed the deal on the "no alcohol" thing (the the lowly general public)

Go there to watch the game. Is drinking really necessary? What percentage of people are already potted when they go in the stadium?

The only reason they are allowed to sell alcohol in the upper deck box seats are the fact that they are not part of the stadium and they are leased by TAF. Whether or not they could in the upper deck I'm not quite sure.

even if they allowed it, its still a lot cheaper to sneak it in

<----- Is not for the selling of alcohol at LSU games. It would be a ridiculously volatile powder keg roughly 8 times per year.

alcohol being served inside the stadium is how tiger stadium got its reputation back in the day.
could you IMAGINE if they started serving again?
there would be TONS of fights and injuries, and i don't think LSU wants to take that liability.

I don't think he did.
Tiger Stadium is "safer" for the general public without the sale of alcohol inside of it.
and talk about the lines for the restrooms!
gah

Yes but I worked for TAF through college and I worked on the stadium expansion and they went through this in several meetings.
Just b/c he said something doesn't mean he's 100% correct. If they would sell alcohol in the stadium don't you think they would make a lot more money? I don't think that a few fights would deter them from selling beer.

When the Saints were here in 2005, I was drunk for all 4 games in Tiger Stadium. It was awesome.

decreased overall safety, increased DUI's.

I can imagine.
but you forget that it's still baton rouge, and bars are closed on sundays.
I can't imagine them ever overturning this "no drinking in TS" stuff...
but stranger things HAVE happened...

seems to be ok in the superdome for every saints game?

We shouldn't use ULL selling alcohol this season as a reason for LSU to sell in Tiger Stadium; 2 totally different situations. At Tiger Stadium we are talking about extra revenue and the risk/reward, liability factor. At ULL it is a necessity to numb the senses from what you are seeing on the field.

They don't have to worry about a large group of underage students.
